Poor Claude in a mess.

Sure I only did what you all would do BB. And I was contemplating despatching initially as, he was so bad, but Chuck and others convinced me to give him a chance. Claude is now head-over-heels for Daffodil and treading her whenever he can. I need to have a word because we won't get the hatching eggs we need if he doesn't do his job with his girls. He's also upsetting Daffodil as her poor feet can't take the weight plus she can't run away fast enough!

Well it's all falling apart here! Issy is walking about like a zombie. We are force feeding her but it might be best to let her go. Not losing weight but lost the will to live although she does have the odd noisy moment. Loulou has some mystery sleeping sickness after being broody. Think she was ill before but now has green poos so Baytril administered. Still wants to be broody and we are force feeding her as well but she is at least drinking on her own. She has lost her voice completely.

Claude is losing his voice. A lame crow this afternoon got me worried. Bouncing full of beans but very close inspection of his throat reveals tiny cankers forming that I hadn't noticed before. Mind you it's the first time I've been able to see down his throad in broad daylight. So we will monitor daily and start Flagyl again if necessay. But he does like Onion and that will be the first approach -suggested by Tygresek I think as a Polish poultry keepers remidy.

Oh,Chris
So sorry to hear this,I really hope they all get better, are they coming back to the house?
If Claude likes onions he may also like crushed garlic(great natural atibiotyk)

Sorry to hear about all your problems Chris! It was bad enough when I had to look after one sick bird, let alone 3 or 4 like you have at the moment. I hope they all start to get better soon.

Thanks tygresek and Sue. Never rains then it pours with our chickens. Brought in a Leghorn bantam last night as well -had been bullied and her comb was bleeding. Boredom in the greenhouse I thought, so stripped all the bedding off the floor and swept out all the dust first thing and put down fresh. All happy again and sitting together on the perch tonight. We'll give everyone apples tomorrow which cheers them up plus Purple Sprouting leaves for Arnold and Boris. A lot of hens have mucky bums at the moment. They've just been wormed and I think it may be eating the rich new grass, as that's a problem with sheep this time of year. So something else to keep an eye on!

Oh dear Chris - so sorry to hear that things are not going smoothly at the moment. What a shame! Hope things improve soon!

Poor Claude! Keep him on Flagyl, canker is difficult to eradicate, and when it looks to have gone just keep him on Flagyl for an additional course.
With regard to mucky bottoms, are the culprits perching or not Chris? I have 3 hens with this at the moment, found them huddled together and not perching. Then they have got hot, looser droppings which stick to their butt fluff! :D

Thanks Foxy. Most are Wyandottes perching and three Orpingtons are not, but the Buff Orpingtons always have mucky bottoms anyway. The Blues perch and have good firm poos anyway. The Buffs are a bit odd!

Will put Claude back on Flagyl. He is running out of steam when crowing but otherwise full of beans.

Loulou didn't make it. Our only trustworthy broody with two clutches successfully reared.

Izzy is out for the night. She has decided to put herself to bed in Dilly's day coop. She hates it indoors and is really miserable so we will see what happens as she's been ill for a month now and no sign of improvement. No medication and no force feeding we have decided. Her quality of life is poor so if she deteriorates it's pts.

Chris, I've just seen your latest post. I'm sorry LouLou didn't make it. Hope the others are ok.

Claude is doing great. Zooming about the Orchard in persute of Dilly. Two days back on Flagyl and all the little cankers have gone. The big scab on the back of his comb has gone as well. He's putting on weight and behaving just as a cockerel should. Suspect Dilly will move into his coop soon of her own volition.

Isabella didn't make it either Sue. We took the difficult decision and miss her badly. The other Buff Orpingtons visited the day before, including her sister who just stood alongside with their heads together against the wire. They never went near her again. She was in internal pain and we think the Canker was riddled throughout her body, just as the vet said at the beginning. She will be buried next to Loulou in the Orchard around the tree where all the others are. We've lost so many in the last year.

Our Bluebell went as well. Causing too many problems and not a saleable egg for the last 4 months.

We will now start moving the flocks and hens around to their final groups ready for export.
