Poor Claude in a mess.

Yes, I remember now, some time ago he posted new chicken house pictures on the forum.I knew that it was to good for the choks

Where is Bottom anyway while Claude is taking over his house???!!!!!

We have a spare mobile coop now and it is big enough to sleep in Marigold. It's a big house though on 5 levels including the cellar which is a food store, tool store, workshop and freezer area. We've only got chickens on two levels! Rosie would agree with you thoughTygresek, but it has been worse when we had incubators going and 30 chicks in the study flying out all over the place!

I cant imagine this.5 of mine have been in the house for so long(winter babies) and had created thick dust allover:)

Well Tygresec, the dust in the study was so thick the paperwork on my desk was unreadable, just looked like a grey sheet had been thrown over it. Took 2 weeks to clean up the mess!

We have a bit of a dilema. Claude is now so well he is crowing in the morning and with him and Bottom competing its driving us to distraction! His fungus has almost disappeared as has the black lump on the end of his tongue. It's still bent and the end is white but nowhere near as bad as before. Took him outside yesterday because he won't stand still in his cage -pacing backwards and forwards talking constantly. He is back to his nice red neck colour and I thought his crop would explode yesterday! Problem is I don't think he can stand the cold at the moment and if not it is going to knock him backwards, which is the last thing we want.

This is probably a silly suggestion, but would a warm hot water bottle help him?

Yes it would Kegs. But when it goes cold it has the opposite effect. Forcast for Monday afternoon is good and sunny so he can go out then. Let him into the kitchen and he is, for the first time ever, eating rearers pellets. When he adds water to them he may just explode, so we've had to take them off him. Just given me a fright. Took off and landed on our new printer- looks like he wants to roost on it! He's very hyper. Rosie hopes he calms down and I'm sure he will in a couple of years!

That's what I've been feeding him so far Marigold. Has worked in bringing him back from the brink because initially he couldn't eat pellets as he couldn't get them past his tongue. But he's got bored with it. If he can eat pellets now I'll leave him on them. Goes crazy for Apple. He's started following me about now, so it won't be long before he is flying up and down the stairs.

Leave him out during the day. Give him mixed corn in the afternoon, this will digest slowly and keep him warm. Leave h then if his crop is nice and full I would put him outside for the night.
His behaviour pacing around and getting a bit frantic suggests he may be better off outside...cool him down a bit??? :D :D

He started crowing today at 4.00am. Woke Botty who replied and so it went on until I got up. He's been out all day today but isn't eating again. Three problems. Firstly his tongue, although smaller, still gets in the way and he has to take three or 4 pecks to swallow it. Secondly he sticks his feet in the feeders and tips them over then traples the feed into the grass and doesn't eat it. Third he gets so excited with all the other chickens around he burns what little he eats off immediately -hyperactive he is. Brought him in this evening and his crop is nearly empty and very firm, so he's not drinking either. So he's in his cage inside and eating for Romania. Thinking he needs to go out with his girls so he can do his cockerel bit and perhaps he will calm down.

Claude has been out in a coop all night. Didn't bring him in at all and gave him his Flagyl down there. His tongue is still a bit swollen but little sign of the fungus. The black bit at the end has dropped off completely and there is a white bit folded backwards about 3mm left. It is bright white like tendon and I suspect it may simply wear away and not have to be cut off -we'll see.

So this morning he has been let out to run with his girls. Sophie offered herself but Claude chased after poor Daffodil. Anyway told him off and when I left they were all happy. Danger is we only have 1 wire fence between him and Frankie and between him and Arnold. Lets hope he doesn't do anything stupid because messing with Frankie will be fatal.

He's been supplimented with half a boiled egg for last few days Tygresek, but I can't weigh him as he's too hyper. I would say he's now over 3 lbs, so he's put 1 pound on during his stay. But he's still 3 lbs underweight. In the run with his girls at the moment and I have moved his green plastic clip-on feeder onto the run door. He's now gulping food down. The feeder needs to be high so that he can dig into it without food falling back out. He's eaten 100 grammes this morning and should do the same again this afternoon. I keep checking his crop, which is easy because you can see it with no feathers on, to make sure it is full. Poos are great and he's talking a lot and is quite tame now. Seems more relaxed with company, so perhaps he will stop running about so much and put more weight on. I recon he was underweight when we got him, but I didn't pick him up and carry him to the car. Couldn't get near him until he was ill.

It's good news that Claude is making good progress Chris and also that you're able to sleep past 4am I'm sure!!!!! Hope he continues to do well and his tongue doesn't cause him any problems.

Tongue will be a minor op if necessary Sue. He's sleeping with his girls tonight and we will keep an eye on his crop to make sure it is always full. It was nice to wake at 6.00am this morning. But clocks forward tonight!

Just been to give him his Flagyl. The end of his tongue is now tiny and I am pretty sure it will fall off on its own. He was sitting in the girl's coop on the perch between them looking a very contented chap. Came out and went back in with hardly a struggle, so perhaps it will be a 'lived happily ever after' story in the end?
