I stick with deep dry bedding using straw and shavings. It creates some extra heat, but I always pull out any wet spots. Damp bedding is way worse than cold for chickens.
I don’t close up all the vents. Chickens handle cold okay, but moisture and ammonia will make them sick. I only block harsh direct wind, and leave top vents open. I add insulation on walls and roof to trap heat.
For quick DIY tricks, I stack hay bales on the cold north side of the coop and use heavy tarps to cover drafty spots. Just make sure the chickens can’t peck at them.
A few simple things I do every autumn:‑ Clean and disinfect the coop thoroughly‑ Seal cracks that let wind in‑ Keep bedding dry, remove damp material often‑ Deworm my chickens and feed higher‑energy feed‑ Get ready for non‑freezing water‑ Double‑check perches are dry and draft‑free
This keeps my flock happy and healthy through the cold months. Hope this helps new keepers
