Coronavirus

Yes, a real shame. He cheered many people up at a rough time.

Poor old chap. He didn't deserve that. I hope his passing was easy.

Had my first Pfizer vaccine today. It was in a hotel and it was freezing! Probably because the hotel has been closed for nearly a year and it was 'feels like' -3C outside.. No side effects felt, even my arm feels OK.

Aww how fantastic. Despite the subject matter, I bet they had great fun doing this. Mum and kids have amazing voices.

Have you seen their "Twelve days of Christmas" song? It's equally brilliant. And their "I know them too well". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAZ7D8NhWbU&ab_channel=MarshFamily

Am I the only one getting a bit fed up with all this negativity?

When there’s this great national effort going on to vaccinate millions of us against at least the worst effects of this disease, in order to protect not only ourselves but OTHER PEOPLE, so that something like normal life can resume, the last thing I need first thing in the morning is yet another gloomy comment from someone who is unwilling to help by being vaccinated himself.

That isn't new news though. They've been saying all along that the vaccines probably won't prevent a person getting or (more crucially) spreading the virus. But it does prevent prevent people from becoming extremely ill with it, and needing ICU and ventilator support, thus overwhelming the health system. This is why it's important that as many as possible are vaccinated.

Ah, so you can hector people about taking the vaccine, but they can't remind you of reality. Did you ever think that maybe I don't need to see that?. You can continue to spout on about herd immunity all you like, but it won't make it so. I am now permanently buggering off, you will be glad to hear, so need to reply for my benefit.

No you're not the only one Marigold.

There is reality and there is misinformation from the press. When you read further down the article (if you haven't lost the will to live by then ) the main point isn't that the vaccines are not very effective against mild doses of the various mutants but that they ARE effective against more serious infections.
The reality is that ANY virus that can mutate, will mutate, which is why the flu vaccine changes from year to year. But what would be the position if we had all been anti-polio vaccine, anti-smallpox vaccine and anti-TB? I had two friends who had been affected by polio in childhood.

Not having the vaccination because it doesn't protect you against every variant to the same degree, is like saying you won't wear your seatbelt in the car because it won't stop you having an accident or even being injured. Wear it because a hell of lot of the time it will stop you being killed!

Personally I will be quite happy not to be on the receiving end of such gloomy posts. I'm alive and healthy today, although older, and I expect to be alive and healthy tomorrow. Doesn't mean I don't take care, whatever I happen to be doing!

Just as much misinformation from people around you as well. Plus I found out I truly work with some idiots. Another one this week came to work for 3 days feeling ill, as it is only like getting the sniffles.
Wonder what we will talk about after Covid ? Didn't we all wonder what we would talk about after Brexit ?

I agree too. Nevertheless I’d be sorry to see dinosaw go. Healthy debate is good for ones intellect even if it doesn’t change your mind.
I hope it doesn’t get like the old Practical Poultry site which was a nightmare.

It’s entirely up to all of us to decide whether or not we want to go on contributing to this forum. Speaking just for myself, I’ve found you all a huge support the past year, and it’s been good to come on here knowing it’s a safe online space where we can share anything without being exposed to ridicule or disapproval. I’m sorry if my flash of irritation this morning upset dinosaw, who has been one of our most long-term and respected members, from 2011 onwards.

Of course we all have the right to our own views and opinions. But we also have the right to feel comfortable about what we read on here, and since there is so much worrying stuff online I for one have been trying to reduce my exposure to the constant blitz of detail about it all. The article dinosaw quoted today is balanced and fair in what it’s reporting, like the rest of the coverage from the Guardian, and I have no problem with its evaluation of the virus variants and their possible effects. What got to me, though, was the feeling that we are all working so hard to support our communities and ourselves, and hanging on in there until case numbers come down, that I feel it’s not good for my own mental health to read repeated comments that imply it’s all a useless effort, from someone who isn’t personally committed to the task of getting on top of it by refusing the vaccination. That was the impression I got from the comment which he put at the top of his post. I may have been wrong about this, and if so I’m sorry. Just feeling a bit emotional and low spirited today.

Anyone got any good cartoons today to lift the mood? Please? And hey - it’s MARGAIDS BIRTHDAY!
Happy Birthday, Margaid! Raise your virtual glasses, everyone!

Its only 17.26 but I am raising an actual glass! Happy Birthday Margaid! AndI hope you regain your usual equnaminity Marigold, soon. I think we are all prone to ups and downs through this pandemic, and the weather doesn't help. But you will wake up one day very soon in a more positive frame of mind. I don't want Dinosaw to go, I disagree with him on vaccination, but there is far more I look forward to reading from him than this single topic.

Actually, this article says what I was trying to, only much better. I’ve got a holiday booked in a remote Exmoor cottage in May, and it’s keeping me going. If we can’t go, it will have been worth the cost of a forfeited deposit to have something to look forward to meanwhile!

Happy Birthday Margaid. I’ve just raised a G and T to you.
The end is always in sight because one day the sun will expand and swallow us up but in the mean time there’s incubators to dust off, lambing navel spray to purchase and chickens to worm. That’s the greatest thing about livestock - they’re great levellers and keep you focussed on what’s real.
