Coronavirus

Thank you for raising your glasses, I haven't started yet but that's because I intend getting half a crispy duck from the Chinese takeaway.

Though not specifically related to Coronavirus, I thought this might cheer things up.

And then this one might become appropriate:

A very happy birthday to you, Margaid! I would also raise a glass to you, except that I have a cat asleep on my lap and another on my shoulder!

That's what is known as being catted!

Very cosy, in this weather! I'm just thankful that it's the big 8kg one that lies on my lap, and the little 3.5kg one that lies across my shoulders!

I agree too. Nevertheless I’d be sorry to see dinosaw go. Healthy debate is good for ones intellect even if it doesn’t change your mind.
I hope it doesn’t get like the old Practical Poultry site which was a nightmare.
Do you know, I only remember a couple of spats on there- I remember a bit of nasty homophobic sniping at one stage (not directed at you), although I don't remember what it was about. I just remember the shock of seeing it, on what I'd always found to be a friendly positive place.

I would be sorry to see Dinosaw go as well. We all tend to rub along nicely here, on many differing subjects.

Just cancelled our birthday trip to Cornwall at the end of the month, it was booked ages ago. Our birthdays are just a day apart. Guess it will be a meal at home instead of St Ives

Don't go Dinosaw! I'm hearing lots of healthy debate on the issue in the media lately from all points of view in the complexity of it.
I came on because I just heard an incredible thing on 'More or Less' on Radio 4 this morning. Someone had posed the question 'If all the CV19 virus particles in the world were gathered together in one place, what volume would it occupy?' The answer turned out to be about half a wine glass!
Its put me right off my Shiraz!

Try Rioja instead ...

Seriously though, if that is true then it demonstrates how tiny the particles are - a search on Google reckons a virus cell is 100 nanometres (a nanometre is 0.000001mm) and a red blood cell for comparison is 10 microns (a micron is 0.001 mm)

Anyone want to do the maths?

It was really complicated working forwards to get that value (estimates of the number of people currently infected, amount of virus involved etc.)
Working backwards:
volume of a sphere = 4/3 x pi x r^3
volume of a virus = 4/3 x pi x 0.0000005^3 = 4/3 x pi x 1.25E-19 that's a crazy small number!
= 5.23598775598299E-19 mm3
I think they got to a quantity of 125ml
There are a 1000 mm3 in a ml so 125000/5.23598775598299E-19 = 2.38732414637843E+23 individual virus particles in circulation
Something like 0.24 trillion trillion (in new money)

Thanks for that rick. Makes you think doesn't it if you drink a glass of wine or a can of coke that you could fit the virus into it afterwards.
At work now there are only three of us who haven't been off work after either testing positive or contracting it, me, and the other person who does controlling and a driver. Although I did have to take days off after being in contact with the idiot who came to work.

So that's 147 bus drivers tested positive or actually contracted it, 7 of which are still off with " long Covid"

Oh dear, that’s really worrying. Is that mainly because it’s so difficult to make the passengers behave sensibly in the crowded conditions in the bus and with multiple potentially infected surfaces like handrails? Or is it largely because of workplace transmission from other drivers you have to come in contact with?
If you’re off sick, what financial help do you get? I can understand people feel reluctant to isolate if not actually feeling ill, if it’s a choice between paying the rent and doing as they’re told.
I hope you've been super-lucky so far, BYM, as well as being super-careful as much as you can.

Fingers crossed that you don't get it BYM. I understand the financial aspect of self-isolating for the employees but I can't get my head round the stupidity and selfishness of the general public.

South Shropshire have got their act together at last regarding vaccination; had a text from the surgery to ring and book an appointment. Trying to psych myself up to do it as I have a strong needle phobia :-)09 :-)05

Honestly, Margaid, don’t worry - I really didn’t feel it, the needle was so thin, and if you don’t look, the nurse will have to tell you when it’s done. Completely painless and over in a moment - unlike what it prevents!
Get on and book that appointment, you know you need it.

That's good Margaid, our neighbour said she didn't feel a thing. Quicker you do it, sooner it will be over.

I think ours has mainly come from drivers, as most of them have caught it from a family member and some of them just don't get the concept of keeping your distance, and the drivers who think it is a conspiracy. We just get basic pay if we are off sick.

We have been surprised by the random places people are being sent to around here for their vaccination, it goes from a local library to Excel centre in Docklands and a leisure centre about 8 miles away and Colchester United FC stadium about 25 miles away. Ours are coming through as a letter or text with a date and time on

Don't you believe it - I'm oversensitised to things pricking my skin from having splinters dug out with a sterilized sewing needle when a child. Despite the number of times I've pricked my own finger when sewing, or been stung when I kept bees I still have problems with someone deliberately sticking something sharp into me. If the person is very good and the needle is very fine I'll be OK ...

I'm actually more concerned about side effects as the only time I've ever had 'flu symptoms was when I had my one and only 'flu jab about 40 years ago. I nursed my ex through 'flu three times, the last being 19 years ago, but didn't get it myself. I know most people are perfectly OK but I also know people who have felt rather unwell afterwards and being alone and unwell and in a situation where no-one can come in to the house is a bit daunting. At least I only have cats to look after, not hens at the moment so it would only be a question of staggering downstairs and not going outside.

There are a number of centres in Shropshire and apparently the one in Telford was seriously underused last week, which is one of the reasons it was my surgery that contacted me. I've managed to stay with my original GP as an out of area patient which means I have to drive a round trip of 36 miles on Saturday rather then 14 miles to Ludlow and back. Apparently the national booking system won't let you book an appointment if you're under 70 so the surgeries are contacting patients direct. As long as it doesn't snow, as both roads to the vaccination centre are very prone to snowdrifts.

Thanks for all your supportive words - I'll let you know if I survive.
