Reasons to be cheerful

Gee shucks. Thing is this mating is not part of my breeding programme. I’d kept one of her sons from last year to mate to my other ewes but couldn’t mate her to her own son so borrowed a mates Dorset Horn for her. The condition was that he could have a son from this mating because he has long admired her so it worked out well for both of us.
But one must never forget. The proof of the pudding is in the shepherds pie, lamb tagine or mutton stew, ?.

Beautiful hen Shadrach. Is she a Mottled Poland?

I remember someone I work with saying how lovely the meat was they had from our neighbour and OH showed them a photo of the cow in question and everyone else was horrified. They are not ornamental she said.

There is a local Wildlife of WHITCHURCH site on FB, mostly chocolate box pics of lambs, bluebells and other pretty things people have spotted. Recently one of the moderators posted a video clip taken with a Night vision camera of rats foraging along the edge of a river. It was entitled ‘River rats.’
The day before, Poppy had managed to catch and kill her first rat. She was ever so pleased and so was I. This event was recorded for posterity in the picture below, and I posted it on the Facebook page, Entitled ‘Ordinary Rat.’
I got a severe bollocking from the moderator for posting a ‘repugnant’ picture of me holding dead rat, an ‘innocent animal,’ which my dog had killed. I was told that no doubt there were sites on Facebook for bloodsports enthusiasts, but my picture had no place on a site where all the photos were of uplifting wildlife suitable for family viewing. Apparently live rats crawling around spreading Weils disease into a river count as wildlife, suitable for family viewing, but one small dead rat killed naturally by a terrier in the garden do not. He said he would be ‘devastated’ if his dog killed a small fluffy animal and was sorry that I failed to see how any decent person would regard such a photo as unsuitable for public display.

Well, here it is, for you to decide if I should have crawled away into a hole and hid my head in shame. But all the kids I know would have been cheering Poppy on if they had the chance!

OMG Marigold, words almost fail me!!!! What planet is the moderator on??? I expect everyone on here regards rats as one of the worst type of vermin, stealing (and thereby contaminating) the hens food; capable of stealing eggs and killing young chicks and spreading disease because of their incontinence. He obviously has no idea that you only need a small scratch on your hand for Weil's disease to enter the system and those "little fluffy animals" could kill him, his dog and anyone else that contracts it.

Well done Poppy I say! Give her hug and pat from me please.

Well done Poppy big gold star, and an extra treat.
Seriously what planet are these people on. Margaid has it spot on so I won't repeat it all.
Do they not realise some of the cute animals on the forum will be killed by these vermin, which are definitely not small and fluffy in any shape or form. Breed like no ones business, they make rabbits look like models for family planning.
Could we all relocate any rats we find to the moderators home as they seem to love them. Then lets see what happens?

I did point out much of what people here have said, told him that we have children on either side of our house and garden and a large pond, said that I understood it was a householders responsibility to deal with rats on their property, and asked him what he thought I was supposed to do about it as I was not going to put down poison in an area where there are hedgehogs and dogs. He replied that ‘you just don't get it, do you?” and said “we don’t want to hear you preaching to us.”
Actually the nest is under our neighbours rubbish heap and we both have a fairly relaxed attitude to rats so long as they’re not making tunnels under my veg patch! The river with the rats is at the bottom of his garden by the way.

Cuddly bunny syndrome. I can live with that.
Tree huggers. If it’s what does it for them.
Swampy in his tunnel. Seems a committed young man.
Vegans. They mean well.

But supercilious idiots like him wind me up. He knows he’s right so he doesn’t need to discuss it with lesser mortals. But then I don’t suppose he’s even heard of Wiels Disease.

Well good job I've not posted a picture of my 5months old puppy who'd managed to catch a baby bird that had fallen off its nest ... I think the fall alone was the killer and not my Suzie... And I know it's not the same as a rat, but still.... There isn't a lot you can do about Mother Nature sometimes... But if that moderator had seen it he would be mortified! I wasn't exactly best pleased to be fair, but it is what it is. Would have preferred for Suzie to catch the rat that spread the disease my 2 french lops died off in less than 24hrs.... That I would not have hesitated to post at all! Well done Poppy!

We would love to see pics of your puppy, Sandrine, - with or without prey!
Actually I thought the rat incident was funny, which was why I posted about it in Reasons to be Cheerful!

I thought it was an impressive feat.
The expression on her face was "mum is so pleased with me"
Lord alone knows what he would have thought about some of my hens, who have surrounded a mouse and eaten it alive, killed a baby robin, and heaven knows what else behind my back.

Poppy looks chuffed to bits! Its funny isn't it - some online sets are cute and cuddly and others are pinning hides to the shed door and going 'Ooh Arr' about their .22s! And never the twain shall meet - except in your photo. I think you captured the whimsical sprit of punk and it was a bit too off beat for the poor moderator!

Red Arrows flew right across garden this am on way to London in classic V formation. That cheered us all up. Thanks guys :-)08 :-)08 :-)08

About as famous as a fart in a colander! However thanks for your congratulations. I do take very seriously my responsibilities regarding animal care and am always appalled by those who treat animals in a negligent way as I am sure does everyone else on this forum.

Ahah that is funny ☺️
Here is Suzie, my puppy dog when we first got her and now enjoying a snooze in the sun... She is a little over 6 months now.
