Reasons to be cheerful

Agreed, Diane.

The house next door to us was bought by a property developer. She's the one I asked to recommend a plumber...

The previous chap I used won't be coming onto our property again unless he's in an urn...

They certainly are similar Diane. My favourite anecdote is when I bought the ground where my house now is. “Ah you want the field as well” followed by a long wistful gaze into the middle distance. Various explanations came to mind like he’s having a mental episode, he’s seen Haley’s Comet or he’s having second thoughts about selling because no one had told him I was English. After what seemed like an eternity he awoke from his reverie and said “I’d have to ask for £6000”. It dawned on me then that the mere talk of money was distasteful and should be avoided whenever possible.

The property developer next door is fine. She wasn't the one who recommended my previous bloke - the one who botched installing a boiler & left us with a gas leak over Christmas... and ran a copper gas pipe around the outside of the wall, 4" above the ground because he was too lazy to bury it under the brick paving...

Still, we've got a decent one now. I wouldn't want to set the dogs on him...

You can always tell if a tradesman keeps chickens. The girls will gather around them & their van in the hope of treats... They steer clear of other strangers. They can definitely tell who's pro- chickens & who isn't...

Just like our dog. She hates getting into our car but will happily leap into a tradesman’s van and inspect his boxes and bags in the hope of finding sandwiches.

This is a wonderful story. There needs to be more like this man.

Commendable. As he says how much money does one person need.
I also like the Qoranic instruction to all wealthy Muslims that they must give 2.5% of their earnings to charity. This practise, called Zakat, is apparently one of the biggest charitable donation funds in the world.

When we were in Yorkshire and had our old black cats (sadly deceased) they were so nosy they went in tradesmen's vans and people's houses if there was a door or window open.( Eric, one of our neighbours was once feeding some cats for people who were away and there was our cat, Teazer, standing in line for his share! The cheek of it.) We always had to ask tradesmen to check their vans for unwanted cats before driving off.
