NEED HELP FAST! RE: RESCUED GOOSE EGG!!

Thank you. When you say make a hole in it. Do I make a really small hole? Is that enough? Its wobbling a little right now but now peeps. Very quiet. I haven' heard any tapping sounds at all.

If its wobbling then thats good news. It is so difficult to know what to do. If you do decide to help then you can make a hole with a small drawing pin at the top near the air sack and see what happens - it really is just to let some air in so that it doesn't die through lack of air. What day are you on? - remember some geese -especially the larger breeds - do take longer to hatch than the smaller ones. I know the feeling of being torn between helping out and leaving well alone. If only they just popped out like chickens!!
Remember talking to it and making cheeping noises sometimes encourages it to come out!!

Ok. After waiting for so long and not seeing much movement or hearing much.. I very carefully made a very small hole in the top of the air cell (which was very small). Since then I have seen more wobbling. But no peeps yet or tapping sounds. Im hoping this will give him a little extra energy to get on out of that egg! Im hoping to see something happen by tomorrow morning. If not I will let you all know. Thank you so much! I just want to do all I can for him. Now if theres nothing by tomorrow morning then I wonder what my next step is.

Am I supposed to be hearing tapping noises? You would think I could hear him trying to break thru? All I see is wobbling.

Disney will be on next to try and buy the film rights to this nail biting saga!!! I can't stand the tension, its driving me nuts and I'm not the one with the egg!!!

What's happening now Gooseegg ?

Next step would be to remove 1 small piece of shell and wait for an hour to repet the proces, but if you see red blood stop and wait longer.Good luck,I really hope he make it. :-)17 Can you candle the egg without changing his position if he brake the inner membrane you may see the beak.

Actually it can sufficate if wont brake shell in good time.I honestly do not know how long in geese. It seams that you have to made decision if you going to help or not. Please read this first before doing anything. The 3 post is most informative http://www.the-coop.org/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=88447
Personally I think that is time to make small hole in shell.

That is such a good resource you quoted there, Tyg, especially in the present situation. I was most interested to read it, thank you.

I think now I would intervene, specially if the duckling internally pipped a few days ago, there may be a problem with it's oxygen/carbon dioxide levels.

I recently helped a few chicks out, only because of a 5 hour power cut, I normally never assist a chick out. I candled carefully to locate the beak then knocked a piece of shell out (in the round end of the egg) I peeled a little membrane, damped the shell with warm water, left an hour then repeated removed another tiny bit of shell and membrane. They do dry out very quickly once the shell has been broken and you have to watch the membrane doesn't shrink wrap the chick/duckling, which will impede breathing and mobility.

Watch carefully for any bleeding, stop immediately if you see any.

I had to leave the house. I won't b back till late tonight. When I left the egg was wobbling but no peeps. I put a real tiny little hole in the egg. I'm hoping something will happen by tonight when I get back. If not is it safe to wait till morning I guess to break more of the shell off? I'm real nervous about doing that ... :-( but I don't want him to die either!

You guys.. I don' t think its alive. I have heard no peeps since yesterday morning. No movement hardly yesterday. Nothing right now.. Its very still. and I have only heard three peeps out of it this whole process. And when it wobbles, it barely moves. As of now, I am getting no response at all from this little egg. Im thinking its just too weak to get out. :-( If I heard it peep back I wouldn't be worried. What do I do now?

Leave things as they are for another 24 hours. Don't fiddle just in case !

Would it not be ok to candle the egg to see if there is any movement?I think thats what I would be tempted to do. I know there's the humidity issue but I think this is now a case of getting it out Asap.

I keep thinking if I get it out now just maybe its still alive. This is day 35 since I incubated. But the temp was a little low in the incubator at times I think. So it could have caused it to be longer. Aren't they supposed to be peeping and moving right now? I think it internally pipped just over three days ago then I heard it two days ago I think it was. I want to try and look down in the egg to see if hes ok.. Im not yet. Im just thinking about it. If I wait 24 hours then Im wondering if thats for sure too late. I don't know what the right thing to do is. :-(

If you heard him before and not now its may be to late for the little chap.It is always balancing act if you feel like there is no progres and his calls getting weaker its mean that he is getting weaker too.Iwrote yesterday that i would make my move yesterday but averything is in your discretion now.

We all fully understand your dilemma. Wait until there are another couple of replies agreeing with me to go in and help him out (as Foxy advised in last night's post) and then maybe say ok if by 2pm no sign of him then I'm going to try. I used a pair of tweezers, a syringe of warm water and a good pair of specs and slowly a bit at a time took the shell and membrane away. The shell will be very brittle and will come away in small pieces-there is a clip on youtube of this. I did encounter some blood on the way but not much and I knew I was going to lose him if I didn't carry on. It took me a good hour or more to hatch a duckling so a goose will be longer I imagine. He's now a healthy drake who chases me and the girls! in fact a real pain if I 'm honest.

If you do decide to candle the egg check the part below the lowest point of the air cell. If you can see a void then hopefully the yolk sac and blood will have been absorbed which will make it safer to take off pieces of the shell where the air cell is. Concentrate on the air cell area but don't let the egg get cold and keep the membrane moistened with boiled cooled water. Work for 10 mins then pop it back in to the brooder to warm up. Good luck Gooseegg.
