An unrelated question for you, as I’ve not worked out how to use Xenocanto. What kind of bird sings "di di di di trill du du zwigow ? It's in our garden, surrounded by farmland, an orchard & mixed mature trees. As with most birds, I can hear it but not see it...

BYM: much to my surprise, the mystery bird has turned out to be an amourous male chaffinch! I'm used to chaffinches sounding like rusty garden gate hinges, but one sat on a low branch today singing 'Di di di du di di zwigow" to all who'd listen & I was able to spot it singing. I didn't know they had such a variety of sounds!

Bird sounds can be amazing. Years ago, while out working in the garden, the phone rang. I ran inside, but it had stopped.
Three times this happened, and the last time, I realised as I stood beside the silent phone, that I could still hear it ringing! Went back outside and listened and watched carefully.

It was a starling! Perfectly mimicing the telephone!

We used to have a starling that mimicked a phone, currently we have one that does "Cuckoo" perfectly. Bit of a head turner in December. Jays for some reason mimic, Buzzard and Tawny Owl.

Glad you have sorted the mystery bird Icemaiden, Chaffinches do have a variety of calls, which varies from county- county.

Interesting that they vary from county to county. It must be like regional accents in humans?? That would be why none of the recorded calls / songs I found online sounded like our chaffinch, I guess?

Sad day today, Izzie our hybrid Light Sussex died in her sleep a great way to go at 9 years old which for a hybrid layer is quite something. Survived a prolapse at 8 months, a trip into the lake chasing a Canada Goose. She loved blueberries, perhaps that is a clue to longevity.
We will miss her pottering around and tapping on the back door for blueberries.

A couple of pics of her as a mere youngster and the other one was taken a few weeks ago.

Oh, I'm sorry, BYM. It looks as though she enjoyed life to the end though. And what stories she'll have to tell in heaven's dustbath!

Sorry to read that but what a lovely way to go. No horrible decision for you to have to make.

That's what we hoped as she aged, that she would go peacefully and we wouldn't have to dispatch her.

She was pottering around happily all day, her lifes mottoes were, don't run if you can walk, don't walk if you can still. Don't stand if you can sit, don't sit if you can lie down. She was on the perch, OH went to shut pop hole see to food etc, went in said good night and Izzie chatted back in her fashion as she did. Ruth said she made a fuss of her told her she was special, and said in general see you all in the morning, be good.

So she went peacefully, just fell off the back the perch. Good way to go.

Hope there is a sink up there as she used to excel in jumping up into the sink for whatever reason. Plus a lavender bush to sunbathe next to

Just had our 1st local Nightingale arrive back, lovely to hear the singing, and the Kingfisher eggs must have hatched parents in and out of hole like mad

My best guess is photoshop, as that is no Stork, as the coloring is all wrong, Storks have mainly black underwings, bright red legs and bill
With the neck kink it is an Egret or Heron, looks as though it has just taken off at the angle as well with the legs slightly dangling, so it is too high in the pic

Spoilsport! :-)99 :-)08 :-)08

It would have to be some size, and on steroids to deliver a small child as well.

perhaps it was eyeing up the child as prey

The woods at the end of the garden are lovely at the moment, and the smell is wonderful
