Hello,I am Kevin based at Sandway near Lenham,Kent and have geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys, quail and llamas.I am self employed due to illness and accident and decided to do something .My mother has run a smallholding as a hobby for the past nine years.I am now trying to make a small business and I have over 300 birds .When people come to buy they are usually given a tour lasting about an hour. Most people like the incubation shed and to see all the different hatchlings.I usually have between 50-120 hatchlings.I am often looked upon as an expert because people assume that if you have lots of birds you must know a lot about them.In fact I have only been going 3 months and I am learning all the time.I joined the Kent Poultry Club and the West Sussex smallholders only last year.I can call upon my good friend Molly who has over 60 years experience and John Barden of the Kent poultry club who is also very understanding and helpfull. My mother has 50 years experience of breeding animals and has won bird shows, dog shows and even Chelsea flower show.Molly summed up things very well by saying about keeping animals. "It`s not about money or winning,it`s a way of life".
I like to exhibit the birds so that people who normally would not see birds get a chance to see and handle them.My mother and I had a good day out at the Blean Woodland Festival at Strode Park near Herne Bay.We took along a pair of dewlap Toulouse,a trio of turkeys,a couple fo dozen assorted chickens ,half a dozen ducks of various breeds and the stars of the show ,six ducklings who spent most of the day being cuddled by excited children who were queueing up to see them. The stag turkey was also a favourite because he had a blue head. When he liked someone his head turned red. Many people were facinated by this colour change and he seemed to go red more when men were around him.
I am trying to build a website, and a friend has started it for me. http://www.kilnwoodfarm.webs.com/
