Hello,I am Kevin based at Sandway near Lenham,Kent and have geese, ducks, chickens, turkeys, quail and llamas.I am self employed due to illness and accident and decided to do something .My mother has run a smallholding as a hobby for the past nine years.I am now trying to make a small business and I have over 300 birds .When people come to buy they are usually given a tour lasting about an hour. Most people like the incubation shed and to see all the different hatchlings.I usually have between 50-120 hatchlings.I am often looked upon as an expert because people assume that if you have lots of birds you must know a lot about them.In fact I have only been going 3 months and I am learning all the time.I joined the Kent Poultry Club and the West Sussex smallholders only last year.I can call upon my good friend Molly who has over 60 years experience and John Barden of the Kent poultry club who is also very understanding and helpfull. My mother has 50 years experience of breeding animals and has won bird shows, dog shows and even Chelsea flower show.Molly summed up things very well by saying about keeping animals. "It`s not about money or winning,it`s a way of life".
I like to exhibit the birds so that people who normally would not see birds get a chance to see and handle them.My mother and I had a good day out at the Blean Woodland Festival at Strode Park near Herne Bay.We took along a pair of dewlap Toulouse,a trio of turkeys,a couple fo dozen assorted chickens ,half a dozen ducks of various breeds and the stars of the show ,six ducklings who spent most of the day being cuddled by excited children who were queueing up to see them. The stag turkey was also a favourite because he had a blue head. When he liked someone his head turned red. Many people were facinated by this colour change and he seemed to go red more when men were around him.
I am trying to build a website, and a friend has started it for me. http://www.kilnwoodfarm.webs.com/

Welcome to the forum Kevin, looking forward to reading your posts! :-)08 :-)08
What a truism from Molly ""It`s not about money or winning,it`s a way of life".

Wow! that lot must keep you pretty busy- welcome to the forum Kevin.

Hi Kevin,

Welcome to the forum. I hope you have fun and learn along the way - it's a constant learning journey for us all and poultry are such interesting creatures! It sounds like you have lots of support and are getting alot out of what you do.

I had a look at your website. The Llamas look great as well as the Ducks and Geese! I ran an article from someone on the main site (poultrykeeper.com) about Llamas protecting chickens from the fox last year which was very interesting to read... they are facinating!

When you get to the Links section of your site, perhaps you would consider a link to us?

I look forward to meeting you in the forums

Tim

Thankyou for all the replies.Amazing,I only wrote around midnight las night (just got in from the incubator shed).I joined this forum because by reading the various posts it was clear that there are several top notch contributors.I would love to link up my site with poultrykeeper.com because it`s about community spirit and genuine people who love their animals.I am a bit of a dunce when it comes to computers and I think that once I learn enough to operate my own site I will be able to offer more.
I met a nice man,his wife and daughter today and he bought my lavender leghorns and we had a chat about various things concearning keeping chickens.I just like meeting people with a common interest and we both learned a little. He said I had a lot going on here. He`s not kidding ,I am up at first light and still going at midnight some days, and enjoying it.I still have about 150 youngsters and 60 are on the light.I have a constant battle moving birds around as they get bigger, from infant pens indoors to progressively larger pens and free range outdoors.I am putting up new pens with 6x3 wire panels that my stepfather (who`s in his 70`s ) is making.I spend 50% of my time building/rebuilding.I have to laugh, but part of my business plan was to sell poultry houses and runs.I can`ty keep up with my own housing,so that idea is on the back burner for the forseeable future.
A friend of mine just phoned about sexing her goose beacause it`s noisy.I have recommended that she looks at poultrykeeper.com because although I have a small flock of dewlap Toulouse I am by no means an expert on geese.I often sex ducks that way if I`m catching them in a feild and they`re adult. When they are noisy I know it`s a duck. With my geese the gander usually calls very loudly which is the opposite way round.
I remember last year Molly gave me a trio of turkeys.I rang her up that night and said "the stag is crying,or making funny noise" Molly said "what do you think" I said "I think it`s homesick and I am cuddling it" Molly laughed and told me "They make that noise when it`s bedtime". My name could have been Rodney that day, what a plonker, but we had a laugh and that`s what it`s about.

Hi Kevin & welcome from me too :-)08 Look forward to seeing pics of your animals!

Kevin - you will indeed find a lot of kindred spirits and those who are generously offering their wisdom here. Greetings! :D
