Coronavirus

And for today’s cockup; https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-54561788

At least it was her own swab....
OH has been suffering from some kind of post-viral (not covid) problem ever since last October when he caught it at a flu clinic before these were conducted the way they are now. He has postnasal drip, which makes him have to clear his throat constantly, over and over, nearly all the time. He and his doctor have worked through a whole triage list of medications, inhalers, nose drops, stomach acid regulators, plus we have tried to find a whole variety of allergens that might be implicated, eg dairy, nuts, pollen from our birch trees etc etc - nothing has made any difference. He finds it very tiring and frustrating, although he’s been told it’s a common condition and basically not harmful, it’s taken over his life, and mine, for months.
However, two weeks ago he got a long-awaited appt. at the local ENT clinic, for next week, for then to have an initial look at it. Hooray! Much rejoicing in the ranks!
This morning he had a phone call from the hospital. Brief message, no explanation; ‘Sorry, your appointment has been cancelled, ‘due to Covid.’
Hampshire is in the lowest risk category, with comparatively few cases, nowhere near further lockdown, and without pressure from large numbers of cases ATM. We’ve both had dental work done in the last week or so, which one would imagine carries similar risk to looking at your throat and nose. If they can’t mask up and look at his throat, what is an ENT dept. doing all day?
So much for the message about ‘If you need the NHS, it’s still there for you.’

Poor you and poor Tony. Does make you wonder what they do doesn't it. Our local hospital seems to be carrying on not too badly, know several people who have got appointments there and none have been cancelled. A friend who was due to have a hip replaced got transferred from the hospital to the local private hospital for his op.
When mum got a lot of pain in June, 911 advised us to take her to the local hospital, quick phone call and we told what to do on arrival, and she was whisked in albeit alone. Kidney stones as it turned out, about a month later they blasted them and touch wood all ok

Oh, dear, Marigold, that's not good. I hope your OH is seen soon. My OH, Andy, has an appointment later this month for a steroid injection into his knee. Yippee! He'll soon be walking properly again. I have an appointment for a mammogram, not so yippee, but it has to be done. Western Isles Hospital doesn't have an ITU (you get helicoptered to Inverness) so with so few cases here they are probably able to get back to normal more quickly.

Teflon Dom comes to mind." Off with his head" He really is a slimy oik.

So we are under tier 2 from midnight in Havering, and also Essex, but Thurrock also part of Essex where I work, being a unitary authority isn't going to join in in spite of a high number of cases.
Just been in Tesco and once again virtually no masks being warn, no one at the entrance to store, no sanitiser anywhere. Of the people with masks a lot have them under their nose. Or pull them down to talk to a friend.

I'd say we're heading to lockdown again too. It's already been recommended twice within a week, but the Government are dithering. Cases have been rising out of control. 1,200 yesterday nationwide, and I think it was 1,000 today. Our county had been doing really well until this week, with the lowest number of cases nationwide. Sadly, it has now risen, (we're now 3rd from lowest) due mostly to a couple of "events". One a sporting event with celebrations afterwards, and the other a retirement party. So, not teens out socialising. The level of anger at those involved is huge, but understandable.

Have to say though, compliance with mask wearing and sanitising etc. around our area is almost 100%, from what I can see. The only issue is that too many are wearing visors rather than masks, which do so little to protect anyone that there are calls for them to be banned.

My grandson's 1st birthday is on Sunday. His mum is getting a sign for his "memory book": "F's locked down 1st Birthday party. Your're NOT invited!" :-)08 :-)08

Hope too that it goes ok, Diane. They're very unpleasant, but a necessary evil.

Luckily OH got her routine mammogram booked in January. Hope yours is ok. As she says a few minutes unpleasantness is better than a few months chemo if you ignore that letter. Bit like the bowel cancer screening, bit of a performance but preferable to the alternative.

You might like to sign this one - petition to support Marcus Rashford’s campaign for free school meals during holidays for kids from families on benefits.

Ending the previous scheme is disgusting. Continuing it would cost peanuts compared with the millions that have been lining the pockets of Boris’s friends.

The petition says;

Government should support vulnerable children & #endchildfoodpoverty by implementing 3 recommendations from the National Food Strategy to expand access to Free School Meals, provide meals & activities during holidays to stop holiday hunger & increase the value of and expand the Healthy Start scheme

More details
Covid-19 has been tough on us all but Government should ensure children don’t pay the price:

- 14% of parents & 10% of children have experienced food insecurity over the last 6 months
- 32% of families have lost income as a result of Covid-19
- Demand for food banks this winter is predicted to be 61% higher than last.

With the Child Food Poverty Taskforce, I am calling for Government to allocate money to

- Expand free school meals to all under-16s where a parent or guardian is in receipt of Universal Credit or equivalent benefit
- Provide meals & activities during all holidays
- Increase the value of Healthy Start vouchers to at least £4.25 per week, and expand the scheme.

These 3 recommendations must be implemented without delay to #endchildfoodpoverty.

Yes, indeed. I must be due for the bowel cancer screening soon, too.

Over 260,000 people have signed it.

This government has lost all sense of proportion, and we're the ones that will end up paying. If I have to pay more tax I want the money to go where it will do some good, not lining some sycophant's pocket.

Is this the thin end of the wedge? 1984 but 36 years late?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-54586897

Of course I understand the need to self-isolate and would do so willingly if told it was necessary (OK, I may be in a minority according to the statistics) but how is this going to be done? "Stop and check" in the street? Turn up at your door (and frighten the pants off most innocent people)? Given that there have been false results, no way of reporting a negative test and many other technological problems I suspect the download of the app will be seriously affected.

From the report the implication is that where "crowds" refuse to disperse the police can check whether anyone involved is supposed to be self-isolating but its' use will spread until it becomes another race/colour issue.

We're in Level 5 (the highest level) restrictions from tomorrow night. All non essential retail and businesses to close. We can exercise within 5km of our homes. No social visits in homes or gardens, although we can meet one other family in an open area like a park or beach. However, schools, creches etc. will remain open. (Because through some magic, teenagers don't pass on the virus, and they NEVER socialise in groups. They just catch it from someone in their home. ) We who live alone are allowed form a "bubble" with one other household, and are then regarded as part of that household for contact tracing purposes. And of course, you can go outside the 5km limit for childcare, care of the vulnerable, etc.

It's grim, and of course, effectiveness will depend on the public buying in to it. Sometimes you'd despair though. Yesterday it was reported that 5 people, from 5 different households, were stopped by the police having travelled in the same car over 50km to get a Takeaway!

The Govt.'s plan is that doing this for six weeks will mean that they can ease restrictions in early December, so families can have some sort of Christmas together. Fingers crossed!!

Grim is the word!
Funnily I just chanced on this from the Irish Times:
