That's very interesting! It's such a complex issue. However, I'm far more inclined to be optimistic about everything than not. I am sure that this too will pass.

Slight changes to the guidelines this morning - now, 25 are allowed to go to both weddings and funerals.

Covid-19 has been tough on us all but Government should ensure children don’t pay the price:

- 14% of parents & 10% of children have experienced food insecurity over the last 6 months
- 32% of families have lost income as a result of Covid-19
- Demand for food banks this winter is predicted to be 61% higher than last.

With the Child Food Poverty Taskforce, I am calling for Government to allocate money to

- Expand free school meals to all under-16s where a parent or guardian is in receipt of Universal Credit or equivalent benefit
- Provide meals & activities during all holidays
- Increase the value of Healthy Start vouchers to at least £4.25 per week, and expand the scheme.

These 3 recommendations must be implemented without delay to #endchildfoodpoverty.

This has actually made it to the main chamber of the House of Commons for debate - TODAY!
My reply to signing the petition says;

MPs will debate funding provision of free school meals over the school holidays this Wednesday 21 October in the main House of Commons Chamber. The subject of the debate has been determined by the Official Opposition.

This debate is in addition to any work the Petitions Committee choose to do on this petition. We’ll send another message about the Committee’s next steps for this petition as soon as possible.

The debate will start around 4pm, following the conclusion of the debate on fire and re-hire tactics.

We got an email update. Saying the same thing, we signed it a while ago.

Went into Tesco this morning for a quick shop (ha ha) to find they are completely changing the store around, at a time when you don't want people wandering around confused. The big section with cleaning/ toilet rolls boarded off, about to be a huge click, collect area. high sided trolleys stacked all along central aisles piled high with stuff they can't put anywhere. The quick shop bit for workers with milk sandwiches etc by the entrance is now down the back of shop amongst alcohol. Bin bags are now in with pet food. Add on the people filling the home delivery trolleys it was chaos with people milling everywhere not being able to find anything.
Mushrooms are now in with oranges, can anyone explain that. This chaos will be ongoing for at least 10 weeks apparently
 
Thanks for that cheerful thought, something to keep us going. I hate shops having a change round anyway, but to do it now :x

Luckily we use the local farm shop for fruit and veg which we haven't grown ourselves. They just didn't have mushrooms this week or the yoghurt mum likes, We will just stick to the local shops.
 
Yes, needs must. I’m an addict of Lemon Yoghurt. Our shop doesn’t sell it. Or, as one neighbour recently spoofed me ‘Murray, how are you going to manage with no Beluga Caviaar’.
(For the record I’ve never eaten such a delicacy. I did once serve Ritz crackers with cream cheese and lump fish roe as a nibble and that single act of pretentiousness will follow me to the grave).

Pretentious Moi ? Never eaten caviar either, but I am an addict of lemon yoghurt also.

Was in Boots in the queue with OH and a boy in front of us about 10 I would say was clutching a gift pack of nail polishes obviously a present. he had a face mask on. Goes up to the counter woman scans it, he hands over some money to be greeted with " You need a card, I am not taking dirty money, I don't know where your hands or money have been" very politely but tearfully the boy said " I am a child I don't have a credit card it's a birthday present for my mum, it's my pocket money I have saved"
" well that's not my problem is it".
OH jumped forward and paid for it with her card, with a quip " being miserable keeps you happy no doubt".
Little boy thanked us and gave her the money, she gave him £5 of it back and told him to go and buy himself a treat
luckily the woman being served at the next till videoed it all to send to Boots.

See, normally, I'm not a fan of stuff being filmed, but in this instance, well done that woman.

And very well done to you both for stepping in. Surely, she could have taken the money and sanitised her hands after. Boots owe that child an abject apology.

Would the assistant have said that to an adult? Well done OH both for your action and for the quip. I can't help feeling sorry for someone who is as pathetic as the shop assistant.

BTW, I have tried caviare and was singularly unimpressed - it just tasted salty. :(
 
Well she did say to a works colleague once when he took aspirin 200mg to the counter
" Are they for you"
"No, my mum"
"well she can't use that dose to prevent strokes"
"No it's for pain relief following dental surgery"
" Are you sure, she didn't just say this"
My colleague said she was like a bulldog chewing a wasp.
I just hope the young lad who was probably thrilled he had saved his pocket money went away knowing there are nice people around. We were just impressed that he had a mask on most of the youngsters don't, and he was totally polite to the woman. A lot of kids would have hurled a few expletives at her. I felt like it.
She had rubber gloves on but no face mask by the way.

Agree with you Margaid, caviar is just salty.
 
Very good!. Dad's army could probably be applied endlessly to the subject. Edit, just as I was typing this, I heard Nicola Sturgeon use the word "scunnered" in her press conference. The Banter Boys from chewin' the fat must be in raptures.

Would that be Richard Grosvenor Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax, son of Admiral The Honourable Sir Reginald Aylmer Ranfurly Plunkett-Ernle-Erle-Drax. Trying saying that after a few drinks!!!. Imagine being poor Sir Reginald, he must have spent half his life introducing himself.

Free school meals to be provided during holidays at school or other designated places, I'm absolutely in favour of that, whatever it costs.

Free school meals in the form of grocery vouchers, nah. Too easy for the parents to use the vouchers to buy food they would have paid cash for and then use the cash on themselves. It happened to so many of my friends growing up, with their parents pocketing the family allowance and school clothing grants to spend on booze, fags and glad rags. Meanwhile their kids lived on beans on toast and went to school in clothes that were falling apart.
