Coronavirus

Thank you for the kind messages. I did indeed have a very high temperature on Saturday - husband called 111 and during the day we went through a variety of phone calls from a range of nurses and doctors and eventually a real live doctor arrived in full gear.
A few weeks ago I had a course of antibiotics for a minor UTI. I knew this wasn’t entirely cured but as it wasn’t problematic I really didn’t want to undergo another course of antibiotics, so left it until the end of last week to contact my doctor and provide a urine sample. I hadn’t had the result of this test, but was happy to wait until the start of next week to see if any treatment was needed. However, the on-call doctor said it was quite possible that the UTI had flared up suddenly and caused the fever. He gave me a packet of stronger antibiotics and told me to contact my own doc if they didn’t clear it up. We also agree that I should apply for a Covid test, to see if that was involved - he said that Covid presents in many ways, especially in older people, not always with the classic symptoms which I didn’t have.
Applying online for a postal test isn’t straightforward. They want a lot of personal info, including your NI number, then they send you a text code to confirm you have a mobile phone number, and then they ask if they can run your application through a credit score check ‘to confirm your identity.’ (Why would they be worried about hundreds of illegal immigrants trying to get a free Covid test?) Anyway my application was rejected because I didn’t have a credit score, having not borrowed any money since paying off the mortgage in 1997. So then I had to ring the misnamed ‘Helpline’ and got a man with an impenetrable accent, who laboriously took down all my details again, - I had to spell our road name 3 times as his website doesn’t have a drop-down menu accessed from the postcode (!) - and eventually booked a test which should arrive today, be collected tomorrow, and I may get the result by email at some time in the future ....

My temperature is now normal but I still feel a bit weird and tired. If covid wasn’t in the equation as a possibility I would put this down to the effects of the antibiotics, but it will be good to have the test and know one way or the other. The chance to poke a stick down your throat and up your nose may add a bit of interest to lockdown, anyway - both activities being transgressional when I was a child. (Our 6-y-old daughter once removed the next-door child’s tonsils in a sword fight with a piece of stick, but that’s another story. Luckily he was able to go private when admitted to hospital - it was a bit like living next door to Jerry and Margo in The Good Life, with us as Tom and Barbara, but they were very nice about it, all things considered.)

Glad to hear the update Marigold, and the good news on your health so far. Fingers crossed. Also quite amusing to hear about your daughter, so thanks for that to lighten the current national CV news!

Thanks Margaid; I enjoyed the song! I can't believe that Dominic Cummings (sp?) thought the official lockdown advice was "if you or your family have symptoms, jump in the car and take them half way across the country to spread the virus as far as possible ". If he's Boris' chief advisor, it makes Boris look as bad as Trump!!!

Oh, delighted for your update Marigold! (not, obviously, delighted that you may have what sounds like a nasty UTI!)

Great you are on the mend, and back to keep us all in check. I am sure there is a song to be made out of sticking swabs up nose down throat.
Looking forward to hearing more about the sword fight.

How about this for an idiot. Just one of many who packed onto Birling Gap. Where large lumps of cliff fall off regularly. There was also a picture of someone on Friday holding their daughter over the edge :o :o :o

To be honest BYM I wouldn't care if these idiots fell off but as always it's the rescue services that would suffer. My problem is that these people don't look as though their IQ is about 50 ...

What? You cant have a virus check without a credit rating?! That just sums up the craziness for me! So glad you're feeling better.

Today I’m in bed, shivery, with a temperature climbing to40C, waiting for a call back from 111 online doctor. So may not be online here for a while. Hope you’re all OK. xx

I was so sad to read this tonight, having not been on the forum for several days and now I am relieved it wasn't anything sinister. The Margo and Jerry, Tom and Barbera made me smile, I loved that program. You always say the funniest things and give the best advice. Thank goodness you're ok :-)

Thanks Tweetipie, fir your kind comments.
I did the test, which tickled my non-existent tonsils and made my nose sneezy but no problems. I worked my way through all the instructions in the 8-page booklet, right from Step 1 to Step 8. Step 1 involves booking collection online, using a barcode. Step 2 involves registering the kit online using another barcode and doing a screen shot. Step 3 involves laying out the 9 items in the kit, namely Instruction Booklet, sheet of 4 barcode labels (only two out if 4 to be used;) Royal Mail return label: ziplock plastic bag; swab inside sealed wrapper; plastic vial containing liquid; sheet of absorbent material; biohazard bag with fiddly silver seal; and return box. Then there are 3 pages on taking the sample and what to do with it after, using the bits and pieces of barcodes, biohazard bag, plastic vial etc. All quite straightforward, until you get to the really really tricky bit.
‘Put the sealed bag into the return box and close the box securely.’
The return box is a flat sheet of cardboard with some fold lines on it and small inexplicit diagrams on the back about how to fold and assemble it. An origami task that Rick would have worked out in seconds but which took me 20 minutes. I expect I’d do better with a bit of practice but hope I don’t get the opportunity for a repeat performance. I wonder how many fall to bits in the post or end up stuck together with packing tape.
Anyway, it got collected yesterday so am waiting for results. I’m still feeling a bit weird, can believe the result may be positive, but still on antibiotics so not sure what’s going on. All in all, quite an educational experience, however.

That sounds like quite an experience. I can never manage to fold those boxes even when they have clear and precise instructions.
On a slightly different note, mum phones early Monday evening, got a terrible pain in her side, so bad she can't even stand up. Told her to ring 111 and I would come over. Got there and she hadn't phoned as "well it 's a waste of time you can't go to hospital now, they don't let you in" Explained yes they do if you are really ill. Called 111 who said they would get a doctor to phone us, 15 mins later he did and said he suspected kidney stones get her straight to hospital.
When we got there you go in a door and have to stop, and explain why you are there, someone came and stood 2 metres away and took details, then a porter came all kitted up in mask, visor etc, and I had to move outside and let them take her away. She is 86, that is quite scary for her. Then I was ushered into the doorway again, and a lovely nurse appeared and gave me a number and told me to phone at 9pm. So I was ushered out again came home, duly phoned, they had done blood tests etc, please call at 10pm, she had had scans, please call every half hour if you like. I had to be in work at 4.30am, so I rang at 11, then went to bed
She got kidney stones, luckily pain has gone down a lot and she is back home now with strong pain relief if needed while they decide what to do.
I will be glad when this year is over.
Oh and I am still dealing with EON, who have no grasp on reality whatsoever

BYM, I really feel for you and Mrs BYM, you don't deserve this level of angst. I sincerely hope your Mum is feeling more comfortable and that the doctors can decide soon what is best for her. Its horrible, all this medical stuff, I know what it is like. I will be thinking of you and your family.

Marigold - how long does it take to get your results? I bet it's concerning, even if you feel sure it will be negative, it will be a relief to get the confirmation. Hope you're feeling much better. Have you been doing anything in the garden lately, as the weather has been so good? I planted the anenome bulbs in March, (after seeing your beautiful garden), but think it was too late, as none have appeared. Maybe next year. :-)

Sorry to hear your mum's not well BYM but glad they were able to diagnose it quickly. Good luck with Eon ... Love to you both.

Glad to see you back on here Marigold. Hope you don't have to wait too long for the results and that you're feeling better anyway.

Oh dear, BYM, what a world we live in. Having to let her go off on her own, after having her husband’s funeral the previous week, and going away with just having a number to ring, must have been really difficult for all of you. Not much sleep for you that night, and off to work at that ungodly hour as well. I’m so glad she’s out of hospital and home again, but it must put a lot more pressure on you both now she’s living alone.
How can there still be a problem with Eon, in a very common and straightforward situation such as theirs? I would complain and change companies once you do get them sorted out.

Teeetipie, your anemone bulbs are sleeping soundly underground and will all appear next Spring and delight you with their flowers. I wonder what we’ll all be doing by then?

OH is relieved she wasn't the only one to have trouble with EON.
Basically I asked to change the account to Mums name with me as the person to speak to. That took about 20mins as they wanted to speak to dad, wonder which bit of dead they don't understand, then after all that we need to speak to mum to make sure she wants you as named person. Wish you had told me that at start as she isn't with me at mo.
Did it all again with mum. I have their account online as well
Get an email, we have changed the account over to your mum with you as named representative. The account is £168.00 in credit so nothing to settle. Which is right.
I then get a letter "we will change the account once the £400 that is owed by Mr G Grant is paid in full.
I can't phone them as they now have no one to answer the phone it is a recorded message, and the web site is down for maintenance.
OH is quite friendly with her financial advisor, they have similar interests and I jokingly call her "his trip advisor" she mentioned it to him in an email as they were chatting about Glaslyn Ospreys. Phone goes.
"Hi, it's Daniel from Pinney Talfourd send me all the EON stuff I will pass it straight to one of our solicitors, they love getting their teeth into EON, I owe you a favour for all the maps etc you have lent me"
