Building a new run

why do you think the neighbours are going to mind? Unless you're keeping a cockerel they'll hardly notice. If you have nasty neighbours who might mind, best keep quiet until/if they complain, and if they're nice ones, no need to worry, just take them round a few eggs when production starts! (Get them on side for looking after birds when you're on holiday.)

I think sometimes it's good to get neighbours involved and interested. Particulary useful to dispel all those damaging myths, eg. Chickens carry diseases, encourage rats, should be on a farm...etc...and focus on the positive sides to chicken keeping and the benefits to your neighbours, you never know but you may end up with a convert or two! :D :-)17

Your both right and the free eggs plan has got to be worth a go ;) , Just nervious the'll say no and I'll be gutted :( . I also rent so i gotta tell the landlord . Hes a good bloke , but still what would you say if your tennant wanted to get chickens in your garden?. Actually I know what youd say, 'GREAT' and then give loads of helpful advice, but sadly I dont think you are my landloard  I've just got to be brave and ask. I've got some loverly pics of some Wyandottes to show them. Looking as small and cute as possable . I thought of taken the children with me when I ask , but that would be...heavy selling? / cleaver??? . I'd better do it soon or I'll have nothing to talk about on this wonderfull site

Spoke with my Dad today . Hes a old hill billy from Ohio , and he says Wyandotte is/was a tribe of North american indians from the Ohio region ?? Ya Learn some thing new every day ;)

Horray :D The landylord, He say YERRRSSSS :-)17 .
We whent to the luton and district show yesterday, just to see some birds ,met some more very nice chicken folk 8-) . Some even have some Silver Laced Wyandotte Bantams ready :D Although the Seabrights really caught my eye (They look kindda cheeky) but I understand their not up to much as far as eggs go. So off to the garden to start clearing a space , Thats burn the picnic table take down the old green house and find some where for my old vespa . Any one wanna buy a scooter

Got a yes from the naghbours :D , started to clear a space and collecting materials, Quick question for you all.
I 've read lots a differing opinions on litter depth for the koop :? And ever one refers to big chooks not bantams , surly 6 " of straw and thell be wading through it with their little legs ???

I just put several layers of newspaper in my coop and remove the top layer from under the perches, complete with poo, every day, plus any other layers that have got very wet. I find the Guardian just fits a Green Frog Medium Lodge, but our local paper is more absorbent, being cheaper paper. The dirty paper recycles very easily on the compost heap, faster than straw, and doesn't have seeds in like straw which come up when the compost is spread.

The salvage pile grows . The paving is down, the ivy is slowly dieing Soon I will begin to build. any one know where I can get some Wyandottes?

If you went to the Luton and District show then I should think the silver laced dotte's belonged to Kerry Wilson, she's the treasurer of the club. I'm in the club too, very friendly and we meet once a month at the Three Blackbirds pub in Flamstead. I can get you details to contact Kerry if you like?
Em

Your right. They where hers . lovely birds, Seeing them clinched it for the family . It would be great if you could pass me her details. I did speak to her briefly, but was distracted by the kids before I got her details. Spoke to a very nice lady called Susanna as well, who had some ready , but needed to get them moved on before we where ready for them. I'm keen to get birds from a good source, And if like me you've never done this before it can be quite daunting

Hi Castara,
Contact the Laced Wyandotte club. Better still, have just checked the map and found Luton. If it helps there are two Silver laced Bantam breeders near (you have to travel for good birds) so I will send you the details.

Hi there, I too use newspaper on the coop floor. Just remove the soiled sheets each day and put them on the compost heap. Also keep Wyandotte bantams all of which came from Kerry Wilson. Lovely birds. At the moment have a Buff (Vi), Buff Laced (Maisie), Black (Biddy),Columbian (Maggie) and Partridge (Connie). Had a silver laced but lost her a couple of years ago. Do not know if it is a trait but the laced varieties seem less inclined to go broody. ;)

Im making the base seperate from the coop , It'll be easyer to dismantle if I need to,
I'm using some timber from a left over decking job. It's 4" x 1, 1/2" Souther yellow pine, boards and some 4"x4" S.Y.P. , posts, The stuff you see the yanks using in 'ALL' :-)07 those chicken coop pictures on google :-)07 :-)07 . It's great stuff ;) We use it cause its 'Pressure treated' Properly , unlike the English stuff The preservative is squeezed into the wood under high pressure , so it goes all the way in , not just the first couple of mm, In the states they give you a life time warrenty on it, Its also very strong,
Costs more , but ya need less ;) , Its strength rating is also standardised , so you know what your dealing with every time. :geek:
