Building a new run

watched the fox tonite, After the chooks where in the coop locked up, He was sniffin round the run , we thought we'd watch him ( know your enemy's movements) He checked the perimeter and walked through my lettuce , jumped on a chair and gave the nest box a sniff , then the play house back to the run , and then he made a mistake, he walked under my window . a hail of office equipment descended upon him , He was rather upset and took off , sadly my slingshot is broken , (an earlier incident at the battle of the squirrel ) Note to self : I must get a new one

On the up side , CHICKENS :D Whow their great arn't they ;) , If Any new poster is deliberating on getting chooks , just refer them to me. I cant begin to say how much fun weve been having , kids brought some friends home today , the first of many theirs a waiting list of visitors from the school
Have you ever seen how funny half a tomato hung on a string is , It was like a boxing gym . Still got some bed time problems , the roof and the flighty white Star '. But their getting the hang of it , although they don't seem to settle till I shut the pop hatch , they keep poking their heads out and make that same cluck , I have seen all 3 do it now at bed time , I put 2 on the big perch tonit they settle quick but the copper black seems to like to sleep on her own ?? sometimes ? Oh yeah , they seem to love that cider vinegar . And do Chooks do everything by committee?, Water time . green stuff time , Preen time and lets all dig the hell out a the run time . As for the lets all stick our heads under our wing time ( about 3.00pm for a 20 miniute snooze) is hysterical . Especially as they all pop their heads out when theirs a noise  This really could become an obsession, Oh well , you did all warn :D me

Your first post was on September 7th last year, Castara - it's been a long journey to those chooks, getting on for a year. Did you think it would take so long to make that coop and run? If you had known, would you still do it the same way, or just go out and buy one and get some hens the next weekend?

Chickens are driven by peer pressure, as we are, so when one does something the others follow. There will always be one in front leading, not necessarily the brightest, which the others will follow. Some find it difficult to do their own thing and need to be lead, just like humans. When we lost our top hen the rest wandered around aimlessly waiting for someone to turn up to lead them.

Chicken psycology I find the most interesting bit -we humans have a lot to learn, if only that we are not as smart as we think we are!

APDC1205 (600x450).jpgAPDC1207 (600x450).jpgAPDC1213 (600x450).jpgThat was surprise  Let the girls out this mornin and the Copper black 'Uhura' walked past my daughter and dropped an egg right there on the ground in front of her , Now I've heard first eggs can be a bit odd so please opinions on how odd or not this one is

A normal degree of oddness Castara. Next one will probably be perfect. All that powdery stuff at one end is incomplete shell deposition. We have one at two who gives us the same kind of thing every now and again.

Hmmmm? curiouser and curiouser??? Now the Columbian just droped one from about 3' up on a perch just before bed , It BOUNCED :o Small very round only membrain at the top and RUBBERY  :o :-)19 . First Egg??? Or food? and whats with the just dropping them????? :-)11

Ha,ha,ha this is whats happend when they come to laing time some have more hickups than others. You just got your first shelless egg.I always boil them and give back to the hens for eating mixed with something else-so they not know that eating eggs. They should sort itself soon, they body have to adjust to new regime, that's all :-)10

They are still adapting to the stress of moving home, at the same time as going through the process of puberty. Don't worry, in a week or so they will settle down and all will be normal. There's nothing wrong with them, and nothing you can do about it except give them a quiet peaceful life (tell that to the foxes!)

The new perch and gangplankAPDC1245 (600x450).jpg
We tried a trapeze today strung at about 6" of the ground but it kept boffing them . like a Laurel and hardy sketch with a plank , very funny , so I raised it to about 4 ' , but it kept boofing the kids, very funny , so I raised it right up , and smacked my head on it , The Trapeze goes, But the new perch , part of an old climbing frame seems appreciated especially by the White Star , She loves a climb , and can just grab a few rose petals through the fence up there , I may have to block the roof , cause she keeps flyin up there in the evening :-)07

An interesting thought , I've taken a few days to ponder it :-)19 and Yes I think I would do it the same. Its an instant gratification world, press a button and click, it arrives via courier, then it breaks , we bin it , buy another , and probably missed the whole point in an instant, Doing it this way, My brain has been stretched ,My skills improved and broadened, my 8 year old girl has learnt some carpentry skills, my 4 year old tells her teachers why chickens eat stones and their built like a dinasor , they've learnt patience and enjoyed suspence , gone to bed dreaming of chickens and when we finaly got them, they were ... so happy ;) . As a family we've worked together And I've got 'SOME' professional respect from the old man  (only took 30 years :-)07 ) ,I don't think much of most of the coops I've seen for sale off the peg as it were, When I first thought of doing this I was looking at those little chinese jobs on Ebay , (holds 15birds, etc  ) but I've seen some in the flesh :-)06 and I'm glad i didnt part with my money , I think you have to spend quite a bit to get something decent . Making stuff is fun, especially for yourself , and to your own spec. It does feel good when it comes together, and if your like me , then usually theirs something wrong with the way any body else does something lol
As for the time , Well Its part of the fun in a way , I work to other peoples deadlines all the time so it was nice not to have to rush / work in the cold, etc , and the working with my Dad was ........Good :-)07 and actual hours spent on the coop and run wernt to bad , it was the excessive paint job :-)07 that chewd up the time, Also I do like a bit of research :ugeek: And its given me time to read a lot, and take part and learn from informative Forums like this one (which coincidentally, after road testing a few is by far the best :-)08 ) Originally I wanted 3 Silver Laced Wyandotte bantams , I thought 'Hybrid' meant over bred weird thing . , but were a big familly , need eggs /robust/reasonably priced/friendly birds . So Hybrids it was And Jolly pleased I am with them too . sorry but ya' ll can keep yer naked necks

Naked Necks are an acquired taste Castara, like brussel sprouts and olives. Hate them at first but in time come to love them and appreciate their difference to anything else. Naked Necks move very smoothly, almost glide. They speak a noticeably different language to others -Romanian. Ours have really cute Beatle style 'haircuts' and Boris Karloff type black eye rings. They also fly very well and are the broodiest hens I have ever encountered. And the bantam version is just soooo sweet! I would like to cross ours with the wierd French hybrids and see if I can get the exactly the same characteristics as ours but much larger.
