Watery Diarrhea

Another (positive!) update...

On Saturday Mai really turned a corner and started eating for herself! :-)17 This weekend she has been out foraging with the other two and the re-introductions went very well. She's back in with them at night and much happier! They were out most of the day yesterday and I would say at one point she seemed to get quite tired - which is to be expected. She is noticably smaller than the other pullet the same age but she has eaten very very little for a week!

The only other side effect at the moment - other than weight loss - is that her beak-eye coordination isn't as good as the others. On Saturday when she wanted to eat she was practically doing a headstand in her food and struggled to select small items, yesterday she was ok foraging with stuff at head height but if it was on the floor she often missed it. When she eats it is more like she buries her beak in and she gets food that way - there is no fine tuning! There is nothing wrong with her eyesight as a whole and she spots little flies easily. This morning her coordination seemed a bit better and she could actively pick out a maggot from her food. I'm hoping it's just taking a little while for her body to recover - has anyone heard of this decline in coordination before?? Maybe as a result of cocci??

She's a lovely placid little girl and is really starting to shine again. She even flew yesterday at the promise of a handful of corn :-)08

They are all on the coxi+ for the next 4 - 5 days and she is still having antibiotics. Any recommendations for how I can build her strength up?

I'm making sure she gets a good feed of a layers pellets mash made with egg yolk, coxi water, crushed mealworms, a little corn and grit (as I was worried when she was foraging that she was eating loads but hadn't had any grit for a week either!)

Finally, any advice on feeding them maggots? I got them some white ones from the fishing shop but not sure how many is a suitable amount to give them? They really love them!

Hi Cuwiar. Pleased she is on the mend. When our birds have ILT flare-ups their eyesight goes wonky and they can't peck at single pieces of food as they miss. Ok with lots in a bowl though. Clears up in a few days normally.

Maggots are all protein. Layers is 18% protein. They need more protein to feather up. So there isn't a number of maggots really, just a %age protein of their daily intake which I would limit to 30% on occasions. So, with layers pellets as well, about a sixth of a crop full. They would eat a lot more though given the chance.

Hi, thanks Chris. I will keep an eye on how she goes with the co-ordination but hopefully it will clear up in a few days, as you say!? I will limit them on the maggots too!

Would you recommend that I try giving Mai a probiotic once she has finished with the antibiotics? I've been looking at Beryl's Friendly Bacteria and the Nettex Mineral stuff but not really sure what the difference is and what would be better?

Giving a pro-biotic after a course of antibiotics is always a good idea, and also after an anti-coxyistat medication, the antibots not only distroy bad bacteria, they diminish the good ones too, so adding a probiotic to either their feed or water after treatment has finished can only help the gut flora get back to normal boosting the immune system.
Net-Tex make a mineral powder which is added to the feed, it contains a probiotic.
Another good one is the Herbal gut conditioner, also made by total poultry solutions, (net-tex). Have a look on their website for order details.
