WATER OR LACK OF IT

I've been filling most of my drinkers half full for over a week now. Makes no diffence to the birds but is much quicker for me and a great saving in water ! Sometimes you just need a nudge to start you thinking about alternatives as you get into a routine which you don't think about.

we are getting our letters next wek from the council saying that they are now banned and it looks as if they are to arrive about 3 days before the ban :-)05 tpyical never any notice even though most people know anyway .we have filled up pretty much anything that will hold water but they wont last long but seeing that blue badge holders can still hosepipes then we might get away with my dad watering the allotments but it doesnt help that hes 1/2 blind and shattered with diabetes so he may water the things that dont need watering as he wont be able to see  but it makes me wander how i stand with having the chickens seeing that they are classed as livestock so could i still use the hosepipe to clean thier run with which i do a lot in the summer i could ask the council but the woman is a right witch and she'll probably have a right go at me instead of just talking as shes incapable of doing that .i have heard of a lot of people that are going to limit what they grow as then they wont need to water as much but i also know people that will go out in the middle of the night and water to .

Tygresek it depends on the type of well you want. A deep bore hole which takes water from well underground which is sitting in pockets under the bedrock is very pure but expensive. A shallow well uses unfiltered groundwater which is fine for plants and toilets and is much cheaper. Ours would be 30 metres deep and would give us 40,000 Litres a day free and without needing a licence. In this area they are desperate for people to take ground water as the level is rising with the lack of industry use and is now in danger of reaching the old toxic waste dumps that are scattered around. That will make all the water toxic and unuseable.

hi add blue is animal urine from horses they use it in trucks something to do with the emmissions i think very exspencive( another rip off )but your right about the blue barrels ive got six of them all the best uncle fox

How on earth do they collect that, in such large quantities? When i had ponies it never came out blue and i would have been really worried if it had. Also they never gave any notice about when they were going to go!

i have been working with horses for 30 yrs now and never heard it called that , bascailly to collect urine and poo from horses they wear a specail nappy which includes a bed pan type thingy that hangs under them and the urine goes into a sack under the horse its weird .

The drought finishes now---Hose pipe ban comes in at midnight tonight.

Just been out and filled the water butts and the vegy patch has had a good soak.

And Ad-Blue is classed as Urea. Don't know the animal it comes from but the amount used in the UK alone- I would not mind betting it is "Chemically" manufactured.

Hello everyone, just thought I'd add my tuppence to the water collecting debate. Last year we bought three Industrial Bulk Containers and while they weren't cheap (about £300 for three) they hold 2200 litres of water between them. They are not as big and invasive as you might think and we have plumbed one into the guttering from the shed which will gravity feed the veg plot irrigation system.

I'm on leave next week and while I'm gutted it'll be raining all week I'll be chuffed to see 1000litres of water collect in just a couple of days!distilled-water-ibc-container.jpg

That's the equivalent of 10 x 220 litre barrels which are £30 each absolute cheapest. But tyours take up far less space and will look a lot tidier. It's all the coupling pipe work that can look a real mess and cost a lot. So I think they were a really good buy Cuwiar.

Does anyone know exactly where the hosepipe ban applies It did say on the News 20 million people are affected and I assumed it was in the South and East of England. But I don't know exactly.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17615364 wil show the map on the bottom of the screen where ban is in place

So for the time being we are OK in Staffordshire Tygresek. We are not planning on growing anything this year because of the water shortage. Livestock are exempt from the hosepipe ban anyway so we can continue to fill water butts to fill the drinkers. Good job as the tap is 100 yards away!

so does that mean that although i keep my girls on the allotments where hosepipes are banned i could still use the hose within the run if need be but i must admit its rare that i hose the run to disinfect as i prefer the watercan as i can get into the awkard places .

I don't know is the answer Karminski. Livestock wealfare use is exempt, but exactly what that entails I don't know. Perhaps best to use just the watering can.

yeh your right but it would be great to see people's faces if they saw me using it and theres no point asking the council about it as they are as useless as can be although if i can find the correct email address i may mail defra see if i get anything from them .

I think you need to register with your water company, so that anyone who phones in can be told what your exemption is. At least that is what I have been given to understand by another forum member elsewhere who needs to use a hosepipe for her birds.

I do know you get a written warning, followed by a vist. The third breach and you get the fine. So I guess if you explained your reasons for using a hosepipe if you got the letter it would be decided, one way or another.

dont know about this hosepipe ban but i have just suffered 24 hrs of rain :( :( :( it wasnt heavy rain but its been enough to swamp everything aagin the run was lovely and dry now its as slippery as anything .

Neighbour up our road has been doing building work and improvements, and had his beautiful new turf laid in the front garden on the first day of the hosepipe ban, so i expect he thinks differently about it, Karminski!

i can send it your way , your not that far from me still raining now we got it for another few days well more showers then solid rain from tomorrow appartently .
