Hi
I had read in other forum that wormwood will keep all bugs at bay in the cop if you hung fresh wormwood plant.Does anyone had try this method? :D

It is a weed it grows almost everywere in natural envoirment. It has a very specific smell this is how you recognize for sure, but I had seem even people selling this on e-bay.It is maybe becouse in my country herbals are huge part of people's life and we tend to use a lot of theese.Chicken keppers in Poland using this with great success. :D

Thats interesting. Where is its native country? (sorry for my ignorance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

Just looked it up, native to Europe and I think I recognise it. Appears you can make loads of tinctures and stuff with it against worms and bugs. French call it Absinthe and make a drink of it.

Don't think hanging it up will do much to kill mites but would probably discourge them in the first place. Will ask our medical herbalist friend about it.

You can find this plant everywere in Europe.Chickens keepers in Poland do not have to many outbrakes of red mite, which is very interesting.
I know where grow wormwood close to my house,I also had trobule first to find it.This plant likes unused patches near woodlands or grassy areas, quaiete easy to spot next to the roads.Very hardy too,it will grow on very poor soil. The smell is very intense when you walk by and brush against it-personally I like the smell.

We've got that in the garden alongside the canal. It does smell very strong when you pull it out.

Found some tonight and will put a cage around as the chickens are nibbling at it.

Some people giving this plant to eat especially for turkeys .
Had read a lot by now and it has good effects on kepping everything bug free.Interesting really.Too much when consumed is no good. You can even buy herbal tea from it.
Mainly used for gastric problems and getting rid of worms.

Suspect it is one of the components in Vermex. Spotted a huge patch of it growing alongside the A38. There is a variety called sweet wormwood which is an ornamental plant and is used against fungus and bacteria. See www.herbs2000.com/herbs/herbs_wormwood.htm . I will get some and see how the hens react with it hanging in the worst mite affected coop -a converted shed divided into two coops and a smaller shed. One of the hens has realised that if the nest boxes are full she can fly over the partition and use a nest box on the other side -pity she can't fly back again!

For the best result it should be plant just before flowering if you can find any.Unfortunetly mine(which i had found)have allready seeds,so propobly not as effective. There are difrent types of this plant too so few experiments propobly neded.I think to plant few of them next to a cop to see if my will pick few leafs to eat when they feel like it-it has a very bitter taste.I think animals generally know with they inctinct whathever they body needs. Some of the people observing that some chickens favered resting spot is next to that plant. This must mean something . But please let me know if is going to have any effect in infested cop.
