URGENT...Please help

I have got approx 10ml of water into her with tylan soluble in. She had a mini fit about 30 mins later but seems composed now. Guess I just have to see if she is still with us tomorrow. I'm so gutted about all this. I lost one of my girls start of may and now this. Just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

It's not her crop is it?? If she has been eating, her crop will fill up - best bet is to see if it has gone down this morning.

Tim

Im not sure where her crop is. But on re-examining her this morning (yes thankfully she is still with us) I would say it is more her right breast. Where a robyn would be red, that is where is swollen. I guess because she is feeling poorly, she has shrunk her neck in so it literally goes her head then her breast.
No change this morning. She has eaten some more mealworm but that is it. Shall I try syringing more of the tylan water into her again?
Thanks so much Tim for all your help

Hi Amy,

Have a look at this: Poultry Diseases and Disorders

Go to the 'Digestive' tab and then select 'Digestive System of a Chicken'. You will see where the crop is on the diagram.

If she is eating, there will be food in the crop that you should be able to feel - is will be slightly squishy.

Tylan is normally given in the drinking water at a certain dose - so if you give her Tylan, make sure it's at the right dose and you don't overdo it.. If she is eating mealworms then she should also be drinking. They usually drink if they are well enough to eat.

Personally, I would only give her Tylan if she has infection - like respiratory difficulty.

It was her crop. Vet has seen her and said that she will break it down herself, he massaged it a bit and it has reduced dramatically.
I have stopped the tylan. She has gone off her food again but I guess another trip to the vets didnt help.
It is supposed to be warm and dry here tomorrow (Currently chucking it down) so I am going to put her back with her mates tomorrow and see how she gets on.
As I said she has stopped eating again and her tail has dropped again but fingers crossed.
Thanks for all your help! :)

Just another question (as always ;) )
Someone suggested I cuddle my chicken as she may be bored in her box so I took her out and stroked her and she seemed fine. Then when I put her back in her box she crouched down low and puffed up her feathers with her tail pointing down, then she semi opened her wings and pointed them into the ground also and she did look a sight. Is this normal as I have never seen her do that!!!!! :?: :!: :?: :!:

Two of my hens do that whenever I reach down to stroke them. I'm sure someone said it's the way they go submissive for the cockerel, I think it was David. They do it as soon as I stand over them. Perhaps being in a box with you looking in is kicking off her instinct. Hope your girl feels better soon.

Oh thats good to know.

This morning I have checked on her and she was all puffed up like a rugby ball. I put some meal worm next to her but she just turned her nose up at it and walked to her water and in 10 mins drained the lot. Then she had a poop which was just a creamy, yellow with a water like consistancy. Then once I'd filled up her water, she went back to drinking that.
She is also ever so slightly wheezy (and I mean ever so slight) which she has not been before and her crop is still full. (It went down yesterday but is back up again today and from the food I gave her yesterday and today, none of it has been touched!
The vet said to put her back with the other hens today in the hope that that cheers her up?!?!?!
What do you think about the poop, lack of appetite but heavy drinking. (To be fair, this is the first time I have seen her drink since Thursday and I have not had to even top up her water as the level didnt seem to change.)
I am probably worrying uneccessarily but we have come this far and battled through since Thursday, I dont want her to give up.
Thanks all.

Florence is now drinking excessively then she threw it all up. It was a cloudy hot liquid that just streamed out of her mouth so I put her back in her box and took her back inside. She is now led down in her box and still not eating. She just wants to drink. I have spoken to the vet on the phone and he said to remove her water for a while otherwise she may choke and to try her again in half an hour. He also said he hasnt a clue what is wrong with her and she looked fine yesterday when he saw her.
She still has liquid yellow runny poop.
I have no idea what to do next?

Hi everyone,
unfortunately Florence died this afternoon but I still dont know what from.
Any ideas please let me know!

Thanks for all your help

Thought Id post a picture of my little Florence...

Hi Amy,
I'm sorry to hear about Florence, She looked beautiful. These things just happen sometimes but you did everything possible to get her to pull through, and that shows what a great Mamma Hen you are!
Take care,
Judith

Thanks so much Judith. A lot of people dont realise just how attached you can get! They are my babies!
She is buried at the bottom of our garden by the stream, one of the beautiful spots in the garden.
Thank you for all your help and best wishes,
Amy x

Hi Amy,

Oh I'm so sorry to hear you lost her

You really did all you could for her.

It's very hard to know what was wrong with her. She could have had a number of diseases or maybe a tumor. There are tumors that can grow in the oviduct which will stop eggs from passing. Either way, the fact she didn't recover and had lots of other signs of illness meant she had an underlying problem that was fairly serious.

I only have one more comment - and that is against  what the vet advised - the normal thing we do as poultry keepers when a bird is sick / off colour is separate it from the flock ASAP. The reason is to prevent the spread of disease. Whatever is wrong with that bird can soon spread to the whole flock if it is contageous. I can see the logic in trying to pick her up - but even in strange surroundings, after a day / night birds will soon get used to it and eat / drink / peck around.

I really thought she would pull through when she started eating. I'm so sorry for you.

Thanks Tim for all your help.
Just wish more could of been done. I guess from the start I knew it would be a losing battle. :(
I really do appreciate all your help though.
Florence was only in the run yesterday for 10 minutes and I was with her the entire time. She didnt poop. Do you think I should be worried about my other girls. Losing 2 in one month is more than enough. Id like that to be it!

No, don't worry. They should be fine. There are always potential problems lurking (in wild birds for example) but your birds will have built up some immunity. It's more normal for birds to pick something up when there is another challenge (like stress, lice, red mite, worms etc etc).

Keep your chin up, it's not always this bad. In general, they keep pretty healthy.

I give mine raw crushed garlic in their water regularly which is great for the immune system but ultimately I don't think you can beat Free Range.

I have been researching Sebrights today in my books / magazines and found out that they are quite susceptible to Marek's disease. One leg / wing gets dragged so I'm not suspecting this with Florence but it is interesting to know.

I'm so sorry you lost her Amy, such a shame after all you'd done to try to help her get better, she still didn't manage to pull through. Hope all your other girls are OK.
Chin up x

Can you give crushed garlic with the ACV? I currently just put that in my water.

As you can see, I have not had much luck with bantums so may just stick to big chucks. I did love my little 'uns but both dying in the same month is not a good sign.

Sebrights are an adorable breed, it would be interesting to see speak to anyone on here who keeps them!
I did read up on Mareks disease but dont think she had it as you say. Read up on most diseases over the last month and she didnt show links to any of them hence why the vet was stumped too.

My other girls seem fine. Still as naughty as ever. Spent most of yesterday with them and none are showing any signs of being unwell...apart from one is sneezing but at the start of May she has a course of Baytril and Tylan when Lulu my Buff Orpington Bantum got sick/died so I guess if there was any infection it would of cleared it up. My only worry is both Lulu and Florence started with the sneezes first before they got sick but they had them for about 3 months?!?!?!

Thanks again everyone! :)

Hi Amy

Yes garlic is fine with ACV, are you using a plastic drinker? as shouldnt put ACV in galvanised. Glad your other hens are ok.
