It's the first time for me . Tilly was only 9 months old and was fine yesterday evening. This morning she was in the nest box when I went to work, I thought she was laying although she looked a bit fluffed up so I wondered if she'd gone broody. When my son got home from college at about 4 she was still there so he lifted her out to see if she'd feed. She was not happy, droopy wings and kept squatting and wouldn't eat. He got our lovely chicken keeping neighbour, she could feel a compacted crop so syringed some olive oil down. When I got home my son said Tilly seemed brighter and the crop felt less hard. We left her in a comfy box in a spare bedroom, but she was dead when I checked on her later.

I'm really quite tearful, poor little thing but at least she's not suffering now and it was quick. My neighbour said she could also see something hanging out of her vent, and wondered about a prolapse although she didn't think Tilly was egg bound.

I just hope it was something physical and not catching, the other three were ok when they went to bed.

Hi Dawn, sorry to hear about Tilly- at least she is not suffering anymore- unfortunately as my granny used to say to me "where there's live stock, there's deadstock" Sometimes these things happen, not that often but when they do it is very upsetting. at least it's nothing that the others will catch so don't worry about the other 3 :)
regards, David :)

Thank you for your kind replies, it's not everyone who understands that a chicken can be a pet.

so sorry Tilly died Dawn  ,she was loved and cared for, what more would a hen ask for.

Sounds like you did everything you could for her and she would have been warm and comfortable in your spare room. She was a lucky hen having someone who cared about her so much. It's always so sad when they die though.

Thanks Lydia and Gretl, it is a shock when the first one dies. I'm still a bit nervous if the others sit for too long in the nest box. Tilly's sister who is identical went broody last week, scared the life out of me as she looked just like Tilly did the day she died. I was so relieved when she came out swearing and flapping and generally doing the irritated broody thing when we got her out of the nest.

It is a shock, and, does make us nervous. We all know that one,it doesn't get any easier,we just learn to cope with it better.I suspect it was very hard for you,as she went so quickly.
