Ive just been reading about live stuff that chickens will naturally find, worms, slugs etc..
but havent read anything about spiders..
are they safe for chickens to eat?
Stanley (being a house cockerel) is on spider patrol upstairs and quite happily chases them round and eats them after..

I'm sure they won't do Stanley any harm! We are always over run with spiders---I might just bring a couple of my boys indoors! Ros

Thats good then!
we've had some big spiders but all seem to have gone into hiding since he came in, but several didnt manage to and were part of his dinner hehe :)

Oh Marigold! Botty occasionaly spots a spider indoors. Never fast enough to eat one, just pulls a leg off maybe then starts talking to it -and it's gone. Hens on the other hand gulp them down in one, so they must wriggle in their crop for ages. None have ever been ill from eating them though Stanley.

I guess it depends on where you live! I don't think there are any nasty ones in houses in the UK, but AUS, NZ and USA you bet there is!!! some seriously poisonous ones. :?

speaking of insects and hens at battle... i have to say i'm not keen on spiders but i especially hate ants and I love having hens now on 'flying ant day'!! I see them start to come out, cover my precious plants that may be in danger with feed bags and then let the hens loose in the back garden with the cats locked out!!! no more pesky ANTS!!!

haha Marigold!
we must have very lethargic spiders over here!
yeah was about to say ive only ever seen your normal non nasty ones, but ofc in other countries you get some nasty ones!
i didnt know about the ants, thats nice to know, we did have some in the summer

who had to bring this topic up  i dont, wont and, cant ,and never shall do spiders full stop no no no no no no i am the tpye of person who uses a broom to get from the back door to the chicken run each morning to break down any webs that have been made during the night   i do more then freak at them .when i have moved the chicken sheds i have always made sure the girls were right there next to me to catch them :-)17 .my farrier came over to help take down the first big shed as it wasnt suitable for the girls { old shed } so both me and him share it down the stables as a hay shed now but i could not do it on my own so i asked for his help but when we lifted the base :-)04 :-)04 :o :o :o the size of them under it i almost died of course the girls ate them all which put me of eating eggs for about 3 weeks . then last week i took my sisters 2 kids to the stables for the afternoon and when we got back in the car ella the oldest said theres a spider on your shoulder well i swore , i freaked i shot out the car and screamed it then took me 20 mins to get back in the car to get us home and all the way home i was trying not to be sick knowing this spider was somewhere alive in my car :o her younger brother was giggling under his breath all the way home he thought it was wicked that i had the life scared out of me .

You had me in stitches reading that Karminski .
We used to live in a 17th century farmhouse. The big open fire was dying down and we were dozing off on the thick pile carpet. We were awoken to the sound of something running across the floor at the far end. It was too dark to see so I turned on the light. It was the biggest spider I have ever seen in this Country outside of a zoo. From memory I have just sized it on a ruler -80mm or just over I reckon across the legs as it stood, looking at me with its beady eyes! Then it ran off behind a storage radiator and I didn't go looking for it. The noise of the running was caused by the claws on its feet snagging on the long strands of carpet. Still makes me shiver thinking about it.

I keep laughing at the thought of your cockerel upstairs  . I've got loft flies, do you think I should put my baby cockerel up there to get rid of them? :-)07

Actually I've got mice up there too so I might put the whole flock in the loft :-)08

Nothing nicer than a big juicy spider. I like them fried in batter myself, but you can get chocolate-covered ones.

:o :o Marigold!!!

Wendy. Your mice in the loft reminded me of a callout I did to a country cottage near a farm. Leaking tank valve in the loft. I opened the hatched and was showered with rat droppings. When I got up there they had no proper insulation, just a 1" covering of droppings -the biggest ones I have ever seen. Apparently they used to have ivy growing up the side wall and the entire rat population in the area used to over-Winter in their loft.

Even worse than horrid spiders to me is those awful, awful daddy long legs YUCK! They are making me all tickly just thinking about them. Usually in early Sept. they all flock into our house, but this year since we got our chickens, I only found one inside. I thought the chickens in the garden may be on daddy long legs patrol! Yummy! :D

give me rats to spiders anyday  , if i remember rightly harvest spiders are the biggest we can get here and they are big :o i lived in newmarket when i was training as a jockey years ago and omggggg i wish i owned chickens then they would have gone in the guiness world record book as the fattest spiders ever  we would have 6 to 10 sometimes a night in the flat i shared worst thing though even the bloke i lived with hated them .i remember one night i got up to go to the loo { drunk } and put my dressing gown on did what i had to do then looked in the bathroom mirror and i had one cosying up on my shoulder yep i screamed dressing gown went flying and thier i was butt naked screaming running around the flat with 9 blokes laughing at me including my boyfriend at the time it didnt take me long to sober up its one of those memorys you want to forget but you cant

Spiders are too valuable to go as food for chickens.

Remember the old saying: If you want to live and thrive, let a spider run alive ! Obviously because they eat the dreaded flies.

We have spider traps indoors with a handle so that I can catch them to put them out bought from Kleeneze !

not sure about the chocolate-covered worms though - yuo might need some Flubenvet pie for pudding!

There's an actual recipe here, for chocolate-covered spiders legs (with pictures to help you select suitable spiders) that you could make yourself, perhaps as a Christmas present for the loved ones in your life?
