Hi Guys , yesterday I noticed one of my girls, necks , was violently spasming , not constantly , shed be ok for a while and then it would happen for a bit , she looks like she may be a bit swollen around the front and neck to , her head kind of throws up and forward and to the side , not necesarily the same side. It seemed to come on after I threw some seed out that they all pounced on . She managed to get herself up on the highest perch as usual last night , so I thought Id leave her overnight and see how she was in the morning , she hadnt managed to get down off the perch today, but after picking her up and putting her down , she was moving and pecking , if slowly , and hr tail is up and comb nice and red and eyes look ok . Ive considered taking her to the vets , but I spent a fortune on my last girl who was ill and she still died eventually , they never seem to know whats wrong! I also read an unfinished thread about someone who had a chook with similar symptoms and went to vet nd they had no idea! anybody able to advise? Thanks ! CC

Sounds like she was trying to get the seed to go down into the crop. They do this sometimes. Shouldn't cause any permanent problems.

Chuck sounds right. If it was an illness it would have got worse. We had our top hen go into a neck spasm after eating grain. It just got worse and she terrified herself because she was looking upside down and backwards all the time. Strange thing though, when I gave her a piece of Yorkshire pud her neck behaved normally to grab it and then returned to upside down facing backwards? She was so stressed out flapping around completely disorientated we felt she had to be despatched immediately as she was obviously going to injure herself. Very upsetting and we still miss her. None of the other hens have stepped in to take command, so the position of top hen in the flock is still vacant, which we found suprising. Maybe they all miss her too?
