Hello

One of my friends has a poor chicken with sour crop. She's been emptying the crop and couple of times a day and giving it yoghurt and garlic. The crop still isn't emptying, and the chicken looks like it has hiccups (I thought they could do this!) after she empties it. Why is this?

Can she do anything else? She doesn't have a chicken friendly vet near her to take the chicken too.

I went to see the chicken today, it's not very well at all. It's crop keeps filling up. My friend say it was the size of two tennis balls at one point. She draining it regularly (Oh the smell!). I wonder if there's something wrong with its neck, just above the crop, it's got a really sticky out bit of bone, I've never felt anything like it before. I wonder as her chickens often cram into the nest boxes (she has 20 chickens) it meant have injured its neck and that's causing the sour crop. Can a chicken live with a broken neck?? Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Love Charliex

P.s I meant to say I thought they couldn't have hiccups not having a diaphragm etc!

Hi, it needs a vet asap- emptying the crop can kill the bird if not done properly, also if she is giving it yoghurt etc she needs to know where to tube it- a novice can easily put the tube down the trachea and drown it.
regards, David :)
