Silkies - Vaccinated against Mareks - or not?

hi Anne, wish I'd bumped into you at the show. Can't believe I missed you.
Do you have an incubator or a broody? Was just thinking that as you want to get them in the spring, maybe you could do the same as girlracer and hatch your own.
Also,is Broadway too far from you?
There is a breeder of silkies (large and bantamised) there.

Hi Lydia - would have loved to meet you -we should have arranged something. Have thought about getting eggs and hatching myself - well not me personally  but I wouldn't be able to part with the males and so ...... I'm pretty sure I have sorted somewhere for a black and a white silkie for the spring so will wait to see before looking for other colours. Where is Broadway ? We have a pub down the road called Broadway but I don't think you mean that one do you?

hi Anne,
Well if you're going to the fed we could meet up there,at the national I was the one who kept dashing out for caffeine and nicotine :? .It worked though,I won the 'old broiler class' lol.
Broadway is a Cotswold village, prob just inside Worcestershire border, but on the east of the Worcestershire border.I would expect it to take 45-60 mins from there to Oxford city centre.
The breeder of Silkies there is called Broadway Bantams, although she does breed LF Silkies. On her website she does offer to hatch eggs for clients in her own incubators, and,I believe if the eggs are from her birds she will home/buy back cockerels from/for you.

Thanks Lydia - she will buy/take cockerels back? - is that before or after I have named them ! I'm stupid aren't I?  I just get so attatched!

No your not lol,she says on her website that she will have cockerels back,I think that is only if she incubates and hatches them out for you, but,I don't know for sure.
She is easy to contact from her website so you could ask her and find out.

Worth bearing in mind Lydia - thankyou for thinking of me - you're very thoughtful. Can't get them yet anyway as house needs creosoting and will need to be left for about a month I think - and area needs fenced off.

That's ok,either Lucylou or girlracer creosoted their new hen house. It does have to be left for a long time but I can't remember how long :? .
It's fun having something to plan and look forward to.The weather hasn't been great for fencing or painting hen houses, unless like me you paint them in your lounge :o .

Hope you don't use creosote in your lounge Lydia :o It stinks! Ha - I can just imagine you - sort of thing I would do  Going to post a thread on main bit re how long to leave house when creosoted.

---last year I put lavender pekin growers in house too soon after creosoting---- I had to bring them in for a bath-they were a real stinky mess!-Watch it , it appears dry but 'damp patches' lurk in hidden corners! Ros

Oh dear Ros - poor little souls - bet they really liked their bath :o Will wait a bit I think as someone pointed out that it will take a long time to dry this time of year.

Instead of creosote the farm I used to work at(when young :D )always used sump oil, although I haven't tried sump oil for hen houses.
I've been using an oil based timber care product on my houses, and, painting them in my lounge....creosote would make a change......save me buying a glade smelly thing  .

Ha! Would certainly clear the sinuses and mask the smell of a curry you cooked a week ago ( doesn't that smell hang around ! :o )

Urghh!! I have 4 dogs and know EXACTLY what you mean! You have to have a strong constitution ( or no sense of smell) to cope with the smells produced from both ends of animals!! :o

:D You're right there,my two terriers are the worst :( ,they could be used in chemical warfare, the bio division.Luckily,I have no sense of smell,I can't even smell gas despite it being scented....... :o .

So there are times when no sense of smell is an advantage - mind you one of mine is a terrier and if it's anything like mine it makes your eyes water!! :o

LOL,you're right,I've got a Staffy and M.T.,the M.T. is the worst.....I do smell her :o .Worst luck.
The gas is more of a problem, twice have had gas leaks that I can't smell............

On a serious note Lydia - you can get a meter that will sound if it picks up gas - could be dangerous. :(

When I was pregnant with my son had a gas leak I couldn't smell.Whenever I went into the room where it was,i'd fall asleep in seconds and have problems being woken up.Assumed it was being caused by being pregnant.....luckily a neighbour smelt it and I called the gas board. They were horrified I couldn't smell it.
Didn't mention a meter to detect it....
Second timne I recognised it from my symptoms, always falling asleep, and when woken an awfull headache,so rang the gas board and yes,I'd got a gas leak again.
Where can you get the meters from?
