Should I replace the roof?

Thanks for the offer of help Karminski, fortunately OH will help with any complicated/heavy stuff. I think I'm going to have to replace the roof Chris. I was going to strip off the thin ply, but that is much easier said than done. The space between the two sheets is packed out with all sorts og bits of timber, some still with the bark on - redmites paradise although I didn't see any on the small section I managed to strip. I don't really wan to use felt but I can't find the screw fixings Marigold mentioned and the current Wickes guide uses the standard Onduline nails. I may just make a boarded roof and cover it with Onduline - making up the two side pieces complete with Onduline and then fixing them on with a ridge piece.

It's really frustrating - the time it's taking fiddling about with this I could have two thirds built the Poultry Palace.

H I Margaid,
These screws and caps for corrugated roofing are available from Toolstation. They have a website and retail outlets. There product code is 18998.
The cost is £4.25 for 50. I use Toolstation a lot. Orders over £10 are carriage paid and normally delivered next day.
Hope this helps. Brian :D

This is all good experience Margaid. I started along the same lines with a second hand coop 5 years ago which arrived freshly creosoted. The roof was OK but the floor battens were rotten so I replaced them and later made a mobile chassis. The nest box leaked and was too small so I fixed that and recently it was re-felted. Got red mite in it last year so re-treated with 'creoffin' (which made me so ill in the confined space) and it's fine this year.

Thanks Brian, we use Toolsation all the time - somtimes a delivery every other day as the builders weren't very good at telling us when we were getting low on things, and they're cheaper than Screwfix. I'll certainly consider using Onduline now that I don't have to hammer the fixings in.

The daft thing Chris is that I don't need the coop at the moment, but the idea of the run was attractive as an isolation coop or whatever. The other point of course was that it was less than 20 miles away. The prices paid for secondhand stuff on ebay is usually out of court for me by the time I add in the cost of collection - and as I can claim the VAT back I can often by a new coop for maybe £30 -£50 more on a £200 cost. I can sometimes be a sucker for a bargain, particularly if it's a one off. We're just too busy at the moment for all the faffing about - only 4 of the 20 roof panels up, it's going to rain from Monday and the panels are slippery enough when they're dry. OH leaves the climbing up the panels to the younger guys but he's needed to help get them in position.

Need to find another pair of shoes to wear when I got to clean out the girls tomorrow - T shirt and trousers will be in the wash when I've done the creosoting.

It's just as easy to bin the T-shirt if necessary Chris, it's years old so doesn't owe me anything. One of the panels fell against me yesterday so I have a nice creosote stripe down the front. I'm working outside so vemtilation isn't an issue either. The 3 sections OH is repairing (they'll be stronger than the rest of it!) aren't ready for creosote yet so hopefully I'll finish it off tomorrow. OH has some used screw fixings for corrugated plastic as recommended by Brian (he never throws anything away if it can possibly be used again) so I think it will be an Onduline roof provided OH thinks the structure is rigid enough without the roof panels. It's great being married to an Engineer, once something is fixed it stays fixed.

As my wife surely appreciates Margaid. Or perhaps she forgets sometimes. Problem is it does make seemingly simple jobs take ages. All the bits I've been saving for future use have about gone now as well -been used for 'make do and mend' stuff.
