Just wondering if anyone knows anywhere we could our quails sexed in the north east??

We have looked it up and done what a few people have said ie spots on their breasts, a dark ring round their neck.. But however we dont seem to be having any joy... A couple of them keep
wanting 'piggy backs' as our little girls say n they are finding it rather amusing...

Thanks in advance :-)

The females develop spots on their breasts - the males have no markings on the breast at all! (I imagine you're talking about cotonix quail) - they are very easy to sex

Lots of people have told us different ways. We have various quails. We got a mixture of eggs and hatched them. There is hopefully a mixture of boys and girls fingers crossed!! There is chinese painted, tuxedo white, courtinox and italian.

Thanks for your advice.:-)

I've just bought a beautiful cream Coturnix boy, 8 weeks old, who has set about his 3 new wives with great gusto, leaving no doubt that he is a teenage boy! The person i got him from said she wasn't surprised as 'his father was a rapist' and she added 'The male of the quail species is sooooo randy that they really dont give a fig about the gender of what they are raping, so long as it has feathers, a pulse and is upright!!!'
On the other hand, my other cage has a 6-week-old bird with normal brown colouring that I am assured is a boy, with all the right colouring and markings, who as yet shows no sign of interest in his 3 wives. I'm waiting another couple of weeks before deciding whether he's gay or not!

Here is the cream boy. i had to wait until he was old enough to reach 'puberty' because the absence of markings on his breast made it difficult to sex him other than by waiting for 'piggybacking' to start!

---Lovely cream boy Marigold! Re sexing-the foam test is very easy , if you Google 'foam test quail' somewhere there is a good little you tube video that shows the way of doing this - its very easy , just remember the females also produce a tiny amount of foam too. The colour /spot thing gets confused if not pure strain so not always 100% accurate . Ros.

I sex my quails genetically myself, but I agree that gently squeezing their cloacas for foam can be a very good indication of sex. I have japanese quails that exhibit either a spotted breast for females or red breast for males, so it is phenotypically easy to sex them by their plumage.
