Hello!

You guys have given me some great advice on treating scaly leg - I've been using a combo of oil, sudocrem and vaseline. I've been doing it every couple of days for a couple of weeks, but sadly it seems just to get worst. She'd starting to limp and it seems to get redder by the day. I haven't used frontline yet as I'm not sure if you have to withdraw eggs with it. Should I regularly be washing it and giving it a scrub with an old toothbrush? Her poor feathers are looking a bit of a mess (not being helped by her white feathers!).

What else can I do? Should I take her to the vets (I'd prefer not too)?

Hi, her legs look a little sore- but not very much scaly leg- i would stop all treatment- oil her legs once a month with cooking oil- that's all- i think you are over doing the treatments :) You need to let her legs settle down- you will not see improvement for up to one year- but that doesn't mean treating it for a year- the mites will be dead after a few weeks but the scales remain raised until they are moulted out- so go easy on her.
regards, David :)

Thanks DDavid, as helpful as always! :D

I've just been doing it once a week, and the red dots appear about a week ago, so I'll stop and see if it settles down. I was just worried as her toes seem to be going quite crooked.

Oh no I think I am an over protective mum.....how embarrassing :? ! I deal with enough of them with work  .

I agree with David, that doesn't look like scaley leg. Chooks do moult their leg scales along with their feathers, and when they do the legs can look a little untidy. Young chooks have lovely smooth scales which naturally get a little rougher with age :)

She's only young :? , just started laying....so I'm glad her legs haven't put her off :D !

Her leg is still really red and one of her toes is crooked, I promise I have been good and letting her get on with her life without intervention

Any ideas on what it could be?

(its not stopped her laying!)
