3 of my 4 chickens have scaly leg mite. I have read loads of ideas about how to treat it - now really confused as I have too much info! What is the best treatment?

Not had scaley leg mite,so unsure of the best treatment.Pick the one you think will suit you and your chooks the best, and stick with it.

Hi,

I can only comment on my experience with our youngest Pekin, who arrived seven weeks ago. Three weeks ago, we learnt she had scaly leg..... So, as it was a poultry breeder who diagnosed it, I bought some scaly leg treatment from her......she hasn't any on ebay at the moment but it is available from other sellers.

As Lydia says you have to do whats best for you. After 4 treatments over the past 3 and half weeks, my Pekin is now scratching, some of the crustiness had fallen away, and her legs looks much healthier. Despite her feathered feet, I really worked the creamy but watery solution into them and the other girls. It says not to get on the feathers, but its very difficult not to. Also I had a spare jar of vaseline, so I rubbed it all over everyones feet.( Each got sprayed firstly, as a preventative measure)

Have also ordered some "Sudocrem" from Asda, (£2), along with my on-line grocery order for today. Having spoken to another breeder on Sat, whom we bought our sablepoot from, she recommended it. If its good enough for babys bums then I reckon its fine for chickens. It contains Benzyl Benzoate, (spelling?) which I have read a lot about, and no doubt you have too. I believe the actual Benzyl solution isn't so easy to get hold of from your average chemist?

I am sure my greek relations who have hundreds of chickens, use aged old tried and tested natural methods for husbandry, which probably involves lots of olive oil.....

Anyway i reckon, if you relieve the pain, which it has clearly caused our Pekin, and suffocate the blighters, then you are on to a winner. I only wish I had know what I was looking for from the offset, so that our girl didn't suffer. Looking back over the past seven weeks of hen-keeping, can't believe, we thought she was "above" scratching- she was clearly suffering!....

Here is a recent photo of her leg, which is slowly on the mend .......I took the photo with the intention of posting as I was a little concerned about the crusty lump, being so loose, until the one on the other leg fell off to reveal lovely new healthy skin. So I reckoned it must be ok. Would apprecaite any comments or advice regarding my hens leg and if this is indeed progress??

Thanks for the advice! Have two kids so always have sudocreme (or salad cream as my youngest calls it!) handy. Will rub some on later. Don't know why I didn't think of it as we are always applying it to dogs paws etc.

Thanks again

Good advice from Elwood :D

Your hens legs are looking good!!! :P Your'e doing a good job with them!!

After fiddling about with painting paraffin wax on my Pekin's legs I thought I'd try dipping their feet and legs in canola oil. I found some info on google and it said to do this once a week (not sure for how many weeks though) so it would stop any mite eggs from hatching etc. Out of 12 pekins 7 have got the problem. It's been a messy job and they certainly don't like it but I've got to the stage that I hate seeing it on their feet. Funny thing is that the black feathered bantams don't seem to have the problem, perhaps the mites don't like their black feet. :)
