Had a thought the other day, very unusual.People ask about
putting a lid on their run (a) to keep it dry. (b)to keep foxy or
cats out. They then let the chooks out to free range, and find
the next minute they have RED MITE in the coop. Now could
this be because they are free ranging and picking them up their
selves. (the chooks). So they spend hours of cleaning out and
fretting over the life of their chooks, only to let them out again
for another session. ?????

Sorry if that seems a bit harsh, but its how it looks
to me.And I've done it.

mites can travel on pretty much any animal ,they are used as hosts for the mites to get around wether it be red mite or lice or fleas or any other yukky bug . i would say that most red mites are probably dropped from wild birds for me i blame the few hundred plus parkeets that fly above my run morning and night as i dont go near any other birds wether its poultry or other tpyes and i still got hit this year .

red mite can be killed of and kept under control hehehe this is my first year with them and i am learning the hard way now i am getting even with them .

Sorry Foxy, I did mean the mite. And no, I wouldn't microwave the mite while they were still on the chicken. Which reminds me the new 'red mite trap' is going to be unveiled in PP this coming month -can't wait!

Is this red mite trap the special perch I have heard about I wonder??? :-)01

My chooks do not free range and their run is covered with Corrugated sheeting. Just getting over a bad infestation of Red Mite. The run and coop have been kept clean and It was only when I looked for the Mite-I found them-- everywhere. Strong torch at night and just got through the 4th week of spraying the coop and the run and dusting the birds every 7 days. I "may" have got rid of them temporarily but not counting on it.

But my daughter free ranges her chickens and the coop is cleaned out when she can smell it. Normally about every 3 weeks. Checked her birds and Coop and no sign of the critturs.

Only difference I can think of is the wild birds. We have plenty around the garden and My daughter has a Cat- A vigorous cat and very few wild birds.

i put dust down for the doves wild in my garden. iv only had redmite once took about 5 weeks to get rid

i have found the main nest well i call it that  , those large plastic garden stores you can get well red mites adore those .
i had 3 in use as houses but stopped as i wasnt happy with them and although there was red mites on the ends of the perches i didnt give it a thought to stripping the whole lot apart to check { stupid me } for mites inside the plastic well i did the weekend and there was thousands { probably } all tucked away inside the plastic i was fuming with myself for not checking them ages ago but now they have pretty much all gone and this weekend they will get stripped again and i am going to pour boiling water on them if they dont kill the rest of the baby mites then nothing will i am assuming they are the baby as they are tiny tiny litlte white things  but not with the girls around of cousre this will all be done outside the run .then i am going to coat the whole lot in vaseline before they are rebuilt .and tonight i found another little nest in the wooden house i treated the weekend well i think they were mites as over the past few weeks that house has been covered in red spider mite { friend confirmed it } so it might of been them but ethier way i killed them all and put in loads of soaked daitom into the groves of where there were it was getting to dark to do much more then that .

Keeping Fingers crossed but I "May" temporarily be Red Mite free. 3 weeks now without sighting one but saturday morning job for the last 6 weeks has been Spraying the coop with Poultry Shield from a pressure garden sprayer.

I have a featheredge Coop so plenty of places for them to hide but the pressure sprayer inside and out and sprayed down into every crevice there is seems to have finally worked.

i was saying that i was free as well but i think it lasted about 2 weeks then i spotted some now its back to square 1 but not with quite so many , i'm not worried about my new house as every seam is already treated and blocked from them entering into any nook or crannie its the other houses i worry about i even check at 6am when i let the girls out  poor little banties are getting very annoyed with me shining a head light into them before they have woken up .

Bad luck Karminski. The cold weather has slowed ours down and I haven't bothered with more spray as all the coops are all getting creosoted in turn when the new one is finished. 50:50 mix with paraffin is much lighter colour and dries in about 3 days.

such is but at least i am keeping on top of them the house was clear this morning just checked , going to bring home my parrafin later from the stables going to paint the other plastic store bin in it.i will win this battle

We got a red mite detector Mite Alert. Very clever way of identifying the early stages of a red mites makes them easier to get wrid of. I’d highly recommend them.

I thought the easiest way was to wipe a corner of the coop near the perches with kitchen paper and if any red streaks on the paper you have mite. How does this gadget improve on that?

Red Mite Alerts work well and it means you don't have to go out at night with a torch looking for the beggars
