Raw wound under wings

Last week I got 3 chicks probably a couple of months old which had escaped from a large chicken shed. The sort of large production where they have short day/night cycles to fatten them up quickly for meat. A friend who works next door to this place found them & gave them to me as I have recently become a chicken keeper. They are very scraggly looking, did have pale combs but have now got some colour, lots of bald patches I assume from being housed with 50,000 others all squashed up. They have settled in really well, now eating from my hand & running up & down the fence when they see me coming. However, today I noticed that the smallest one has a patch about the size of a 50 pence piece under one of her wings which is raw, no skin. Its not bleeding but i'm worried she will be in pain. What should I buy to put on it & what do you think could have caused it?

Hi, firstly i would check for lice and check the coop for red mite- then wash the wound and use either wound powder or purple antiseptic spray on the skin- then just keep an eye on it for a few days- to make sure it's not getting any worse- they could be picking themselves if infested with lice or picking each other-( a very common problem with broiler chickens kept intensively) Is it on the underside of the wings or on the actual body? They don't have many feathers on the underside of the wing- there are bald parts naturally.
regards, David :)

Hi Davidd, thanks for response. I checked the coop last night, no signs of red mite. Have checked the chickens themselves & no signs of lice. Spent a few hours sat in garden watching them yesterday and they do seem to be doing it to themselves, I thought they were just preening but maybe too vigorously? Its only the smallest one, the larger of the 3 looks perfect. Will go off to local country store & pick up something that you have suggested. The wounds are on the actual body under the wing. Will let you know how we get on. What should i wash the wound with by the way?

Great stuff. Thanks so much for advice, off now to buy something for the poor little thing. Would also like to say a huge thank you for who ever started this site. I'm sure its going to be a huge help to me and many others. My husband says i worry too much about the chicks but knowing there is an outlet for my worries has taken away some of the worrying lol :D Thanks guys!

Well Theodore's wound is looking much much better. Scabbed over & healing nicely. Unfortunately Eleanor died yesterday sometime during the night. Checked her body, no signs of any damage, she was eating drinking & running around looking perfectly fine so dont understand why she died? She was about a third the size of the other 2 escapees so maybe she was just like the runt of a litter?
