Hi,
i recently went to a vet on the wirral as one of my hens was seriously ill, they are
Hoylake vets Ltd

The Vet's name is Rob McNulty. They deal with many different animals from a crocdile, snakes, lizards to mice. He got my girl better in 48 hours, she is on a daily 0.8 syringe of Zolcal-d Liguid calcium and vitamin D. Hope this will help somebody else on the Wirral.

Hi Henry. What was the problem exactly? Sounds like a great treatment for poor quality egg shells which can break on exit and cause vent damage.

Hi Chrismahon,
it was my silky, She was having trouble standing and walking and her crop was empty, yet she had been feeding a few days before and running around as normal. The vet gave her an antibiotic injection and a sachet of powder which he said was good for cats and dogs but also worked very well on chickens and they enjoy it. It looked like jelly but was water and smelt a bit like fruit. I had to syringe it into her every 10 minutes for the evening. At first she started making a rattling noise so i held her upside down and straightened her spine and all this dirty water started running out which i assume was from her crop being cleaned out, she was stiil alive next morning and had laid her first egg in about 4 months. the top half was normal but the bottom half was soft. For the rest of that day she was okay, but started to go down hill again in the evening but was now feeding. She had another appointment with the vet who gave her another jab and the Zolcal-D and suggested i gave her 2 or 3 eggs during the day to help build her up. I did that and 4 days later she was back with the others, but still no eggs still theothers are all laying. I was luck in that i only lost one hen to it, my neighbour lost 10 one after the other. mine that survived cost me £2.50 to buy but £75.00 to get well still she is worth it.
While i am on do you recognise from the discrition a Hen the has black feathers on it head and neck and tail but the body and wings are white.
Regards
Henry

Sounds like a Light Sussex Henry. Also sounds like you had a near miss with your little girl. The rattling noise could have been the fluid you gave getting into the airways under the tongue. When syringing you need to get as far down the neck as possible as I have found out. The sachet sounds like electrolytes for dehydration. Did he actually diagnose her problem or just hit her with everything?

Hi Chris,
sorry it took so long to get back to you. Bad news i am afraid, after £75.00 in vets bills my Silkie is dead. Unfortunately this was due to the fact that we had just bought a 7 month old Shih-Zu puppy for £200.00 i took her out to meet the hens and he shot of straight away grabbed hold of her shook her like a rag doll broke her neck and killed her. It was all over in less than one minute. I was devastated at the time but it was my own fault, i just did not think that would happen.
