Can anyone help with advice re a poorly ex-batt. I have 5 ex-batts now for 3 weeks and this one is the most 'oven ready' of them all. She has been absolutely fine and enjoying her new life until this afternoon. She has eaten etc today but is now very sleepy and puffing her feathers (what little she has) out and has now gone back into the coop (very unlike her). I notice that her bottom, which is very bare, is also very red (more so than normal). All the other 4 are fine at present. She has started to perch during the day but likes to sit in the nest box at night on the straw - but then she has been doing that since day one and hasnt had a sore bottom till now. I havent been able to see what her droppings are like but she did lay an egg this morning although broken when I went to retrieve it. Her egg shells are sometimes very thin and easily broken. All 5 birds are on ex-batt crumbs, with a few treats in the afternoon - mainly cherry toms or a few bits of green veg, dandelions etc. All are starting to grow their feathers back and looking in better condition generally but she is now beginning to worry me, especially as I havent had chickens before let alone a sick one! Any advice would be very gratefully received.

Hi Tallulah-----if she has no specific symptoms of anything have you given them. Routine treatment for mites/lice/fleas etc as I very much doubt they have ever had this. Also she may need worming.I think you need to watch her in case
she develops any specific symptoms eg cough etc.If you are worried and she does not improve possibly a vets visit??Ros

Thanks Ros, I'm thinking the same re vet visit in case she needs some kind of antibiotic. She may have diarrhoea but its hard to say with 5 of them all together. I checked her crop and all seemed ok but she did look more red in the bottom area than normal. I really hope I dont lose her as I have got so attached to all my girlies and it would be such a shame when she has a lovely life ahead of her. Fingers crossed and thanks for your help.

Hi there
I have just got 4 ex-batts and they are absolutely wonderful little things. I have only had mine since Sat so they are still very weak and bald but seem to be perking up each day apart from one. Ruby sleeps a lot and likes to hide most of the time but I hope this will change.
I shall keep my fingers crossed for you that she gets better... :)

Hi Amy

thanks for your kind thoughts - my little girl seems to be ok now. Dont know what it was but I feel because she is by far the worse (thinnest/baldest) of the 5 that she may well be the vulnerable one health wise, although she is top chick in the pecking order. I'm just glad I didnt get the girls in the colder months. At least I can get them stronger during the summer.
