Hi, would like some advice, we have very poorly chicken, we think she is about 5 - half, for about 2 weeks she has been on and off. She seems to have lost all her control over her body keeps falling over, we gave her some egg yolk the other night which she did eat and we have kept her in the house in a basket. Today when i got home. my neighbour had put her to bed as she was just lieing down with her wing spread open. Just tryed to give her some food but she wouldnt eat it, she is just sleeping at the moment. Not opening her eyes i dont think she is going to last the night. Its so upsetting to see her like this. Any suggestions what could be wrong with her. Thank you Juju

I have split your post out to a new thread.

I think it could be a number of things and without a veterinary examination / tests it would be very hard to say what it might be.

If there is nothing wrong with her legs - no injury or swelling, it is probably quite serious and I doubt she will last too long.

It's times like this they really need to get to a vet quickly.

Sorry I'm not much help here...

thank you anyway, she is standing again this morning and had a little bit to eatm but this is how she goes from day to day. Thank you

Is she wormed?

That can have some funny effects - especially in waterfowl - if they are full of worms, they usually loose their legs.

Strange that. My Pekin hen had been a bit iffy over the last week. She was still eating and drinking but couldn't walk very well and couldn't sit on a perch. She was given some medicine and she perked up a bit but to no avail and she died today. No worms that I could tell, she was always healthy and a good layer. Shame, she was one of my favourites:-(

If she has lost control over her body and has a wing down.. is sound like it could be marek's disease. The disease causes the chickens to lose control of their legs, forcing them to use their wings to try and balance. Are any other birds showing the same symptoms?

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't mereks only affect younger birds, after that they get an immunity to it??

Could be a swelling trapping a nerve. We lost a cockerel as a result of going off his legs. We tried anti-inflammatories but the vet concluded Lymphoid Leucosis and a tumour causing the problem. It may be inbred. At lot of my friends hens, same breed from the same source, went the same way.

If its an older bird could it have had something like a stroke?? Can chooks take strokes etc like humans and other animals do, I would assume so??
