Video of Dyfi ringing is now up as well. Isn't it lucky for the ringers that the parents just fly overhead calling to the chicks to lie down and pretend to be dead!

You'd think they might have "buzzed" the ringer as at Dyfi they take the chicks from the nest and do everything on the ground. Even luckier for the ringer at Glaslyn that they don't "buzz" the nest and that the chicks are fairly docile. Double rings, weighing and measuring three opsrey chicks while at the top of a ladder? No thanks! Wonderful to see how he soothed and petted them when they became a little fractious.

It says somewhere that the chicks weigh about 1.5kilos each at that stage. Carrying three of them down that ladder and back up again is nearly the same weight as carrying our Norfolk Terrier. Sooner him than me.

They were heavier than that - females over 1.7 Kg each and the male just under 1.4 I think - haven't checked for the exact weight. The Glaslyn femalse were both over 1.5Kg which is the maximum their scales measure, so it looks like big healthy young ospreys this year.

That's interesting - male birds of prey are usually smaller than females.

Llyn Brenig have ringed and named the single female osprey chick there. She's called Luned and weighed 1.770 Kg.
So we know three female osprey chicks are over 1.7 Kg (two at Dyfi, one at Llyn Brenig) and to quote Glaslyn "the two females came in well above 1.5Kg which is the maximum if the scale which means they are all a good healthy weight. The two males, one at Glaslyn and one at Dyfi weighed 1.460Kg and 1.410 Kg respectively, so yes Marigold, the males are smaller than the females.

Two of the juvenile ospreys are still at the Glaslyn nest with dad Aran. The very feisty female, KS1, has gone leaving the male (KS2) and the other female (KS3). Aran is still bringing them fish while they wait for the right weather conditions.

I think they're just hanging about enjoying an extra bit of holiday without Mrs G and KS1 breathing down their beaks and bossing them around.
