Way back in April we got a mum and nine chicks, unfortunately we lost a couple during the year, but we have got some really nice chickens. We did think they were all hens....... :-)17 but..... Little Lacy started to crow :-)06 . He sounds like a car alarm with not enough battery power....I am giving eggs to all the neighbours in the hope no one complains...... :-)01

And... my salmon faverolle cockerel has just started too......so... more eggs to give away, at this rate I will be buying my own eggs from ASDA's :-)07

nothing worse then having boys when you know you cant have them and to try an keep everyone happy with it , i made the decision to let my boy go broke my heart as he was so cute and everyone loved him especailly an old italian guy who in his late 70s he loved my little boy to death and like everyone around here adored waking up to him i had to lie and say a freind took him so he could go make babies , although the council said it was fine to keep him until someone complained i could not take the risk but early one morning at about 5,40 am he was already crowing and i was sitting by the back door having my coffee ready to let them out at 6 before i went to the stables and someone was shouting loud gut feeling but i am so sure they were shouting at him to shut up which is why i made the decision before any trouble started really hope you get to keep them along with the peace and dont have to go making any decisions um but not sure about any future breeding to worried i will get cockerals thankfully though i have found some great peeps who breed the birds i want .

What we need is genetically modified parthenogenic hens that only produce female chicks!

There are quite a few breeds which are autosexing at hatch, or maybe try a sex linked cross? :-)17

A cheap minor operation to remove the crowing impulse, but retain all the other noises cockerels make, would be nice. Sure if someone comes up with it big money will be made. Our little boy Snowdrop (hoped it was a girl) is now crowing at 5.30am. Around here at night you can hear a pin drop at 20 metres. Fortunately he is in a shed but still wakes us up as we are alongside him. If he carries on he will be off heating and bundled into a rearer at the far end of the new enclosure.
