Hello everyone.
I have been keeping hens and roosters for years and now I want to branch out to keep turkeys.
I have a question for someone.
Is it possible to contain turkeys in a generously sized pen by clipping their wings to prevent them from flying out of a five and a half foot pen fence like you would for hens?

Hello Queen Bee,

A warm welcome to the forum, great to have an NZ poultry keeper on the forum - I think there are a couple now from NZ registered.

I have put your post into a separate topic in the Welcome section but really, you might find a better response to your question by posting in the Other Poultry forum. There are a few people on the forum that keep Turkeys.

I don't keep Turkeys here but I would think that clipping a wing (not both...) would keep them on the ground.

Hello and welcome to the forum :)
You may find that the hens will still fly- the stags will become too heavy to fly very high -clipping one wing (as already mentioned by TIm) may keep them in but they are very good fliers and love to be up high. Can you not cover the top of the run with netting? this would keep them in and you wouldn't need to clip their wings. They can become very tame and friendly birds- i had to "herd" mine in from the field every night- otherwise they liked to roost up the tallest trees they could find- Also, they are not the brightest of birds- they will stand out in the rain/snow and get soaked- unless you put them into their house- and they are also not the hardiest of birds- as long as you keep them dry- they will do fine- you will love them! b
regards, David :)

Hope you are OK after the large quake, I am a devotee of NZ and have been there several times. Christchurch such a wonderful city.
I have good news from my rellies out there. Take care.
Have no experience with turkeys.
