Has the flood of completely irrelevant posts finished? I noticed the last post was Wednesday and nothing since. They were arriving at the rate of 5 a minute up to then!
Thanks Josh.
Happily I was on holiday dealing with an invasion of horseflies instead. I've come home to find that my Cream Legbar hybrid has gone broody. What were the chances of that???
It's been pretty stressful here @Icemaiden . Our second heatwave was pretty severe with 4 days reaching over 40C. The two from the top enclosure were rehomed in the bread oven room behind the kitchen for the first heatwave and stayed there two weeks. I've insulated the roof so it normally doesn't reach 27C, but it reached 30C this time. The chickens from the front enclosure were brought into cages in the hall as and when they reached 'tilt' and stayed overnight to recover. The house peaked at 27.1C, so OK, but they do make a fair bit of noise, particularly as Eric started crowing just after midnight and then every half hour!!!!! We hose the areas under the trees and have an arrangement with mesh inserts for the coop doors which normally works, but not at those temperatures. Record temperature set last year was 42.5C. Longer term we need a second building outside converting for temporary cool housing, but it need a lot of work, so not this year.
Eric is a hero. A kestrel took a blackbird out of the fig tree and landed on the grass with it. Eric saw the plight of the blackbird and attacked the kestrel which immediately released the blackbird and then flew off itself. They have short memories blackbirds. It was back in the same fig tree next morning.
Third heatwave arrives at the weekend and no rain here for 4 weeks now. Beginning to think Ireland would be a better choice.
