Aileen, if you're happy to let her stay in the house with you, I would carry on! She is obviously beeing spoiled rotten, why would she want to live with other hens outside! Hope she gets better and hope she enjoyed x factor!

Back again- sorry!!
I have had my little girl back at the vets again, I took her first thing this morning and the vet had her today purely for observation today and we have come to a conclusion....
We think that I may have,if there is such a thing, is a disabled chicken ???
Yep i can't believe I am writing it but her non chcken like behaviour ie: no squwacking or running about etc etc and her actions being so slow and methodical that he feels something may have affected her when hatching. He is a city vet so we are learning together at the mo but all the signs are there, the wonky walk, the disjointed co-ordination and the slowly slowly way she does things
Again, your thoughts??
PS: He has also offered to euthanaise her FOC, but I think that would be an absolute travesty, she might be in her own wee world but surely if I am daft enough to keep her indoors and live my life with a disinfectant cloth at the ready to wipe up her presents she should be given a chance ??

either that or a parasite eating away at her brain causing her symptoms and possibly pain. i personally don't think it would be fair to keep her. but it's your choice at the end of the day. we(the vets i worked at) had a litter of kittens to be put down because of it. they had been born in a box outside and the flies got to the newborns. really sad. :( http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/71500.htm

It is your choice but we can't really know what they are going through so for me it would be euthanise.

No, I don't agree! For me it is always give them a chance. If she were in pain she would be huddled in a corner, not wanting to move around or eat. If you are happy to look after her in the house and it sounds as though you are, then I would go ahead, give her a chance. You will know when/if she is in pain and unhappy and when to call it a day.

Sorry Steph,
But we're all entitled to our own, please save your fighting talk for another forum. Poultrykeeper works because we talk and treat other like friends regardless of opinion
The objective of here is for others to offer and advise not ridicule people because they have a different opinion to your own.
At the end of the day this is my post,my chicken and rightly or wrongly my decision.
But thanks for your thots.

Thanks for posting that reply Aileen. Quite frankly I find Steph's reply insulting and patronising and I think the moderators should tick her off for posting it. Could a moderator comment on this please.

I'm not even going to reply to her post because she isn't the sort of person I want to have any kind of conversation with.

Best of luck with your very lucky hen Aileen.

Hi Aileen. You have the hen and have clearly taken the responsibility for her wellbeing. You are the person best placed to decide the appropriate course of action. If you feel she is still happy and enjoys being with you then a pet she becomes.
We are not afraid to make difficult decisions and the welfare of the chicken is always paramount. And we are not afraid to make unconventional decisions either. I took a cockerel to work with me for a month so that I could exercise his paralised leg hourly. It was working too, as he started to get strength and movement back in it. Unfortunately his other leg then went and, based on his quality of life and prospects for recovery, we had to let him go and we still miss him. His name was Boris.
So were she mine I would take her in and continue to care for her until a time came when I felt she was unhappy, always conscious that we may be in danger of putting our feelings above those of the hen.
So I wish the very best fortune for you both.
PS We bulk buy kitchen roll and toilet roll now because we use so much.

Due to comments, I have decided to delete a post on this thread which as a moderator I really am reluctant to do. Whilst we completely understand it is important to value everyones opinions, occasionally and I am sure quite by accident people can be upset by remarks made. I am sure however, no intent to cause upset was meant!

It is always a good idea to read a post a couple of times before posting, and think about how it may be possibly be intepreted.

This forum is about providing support and help to other poultrykeepers, we are a friendly and helpful bunch so please can we all strive to keep it this way, even though our opinions may differ it is important that posts do not become pointed or potentially hurtful.

Many thanks for reading, and we all appreciate your help and support on the forum! :D
