Hi,

Was browsing through the poultry garden show timetable and the Alrewas show, which is apparently new and needs lots of support, is up the road from us.

I am wondering whether or not I could enter our Sablepoot. She is a garden chicken but everything about her is pretty scrummy. Her comb seems a little ragged but very red, her colouring seems very striking and even, her carriage seems to have a good breadth etc..... I reckon these are not proper chicken terms so What should I be looking for in a sablepoot??

I have red they lose there "TYPE" when laying. She started laying 3 weeks ago, and is approx 26 wks old. She does, however, come from Show stock winners, both her parents won some big prizes at the National/Federation.

I just thought as we have enjoyed attending a couple of local shows, it would be nice for me & my son to visit and enter our Millie.

What do you all think? any advice welcome and please be honest I don;t want to be laughing stock.........Oh and she did lose three blood foot feathers on one foot earlier on in the spring.

Hi Sharron, she is not bad but the lack of feathers on her feet will let her down in a show class- the foot feathers have to be in perfect condition for showing booted bantams- most people have them indoors and keep their feet clean and dry - but if you want to go ahead- you have nothing to lose- it will give you an idea what the competition is like and you can only benefit from it. :) If you do, i suggest you give her a complete bath two days before and keep her in on dry shavings until after the show. Good luck, regards, David :)

she is gorgeous, why not give it a go?
when i spoke to the secretary of our local show, he said, if you don't enter you'll never know how good or bad your birds are
I have no experience of poots tho sorry

Thanks David and GR,

I guess the foot feathers would definately be an issue!thankyou for your frankness. She does have lovely smooth scaled feet though.

I think I may just give it a go..... like you both say I have nothing to lose, and its one more entry for the organisers. Plus we get to look at all the other entries....and learn more about all these breeds including Buff Columbians David,

Now as for keeping her in for a couple of days, and giving her a bath, may have to work on that one, Havn't bathed Millie yet, and she can certainly fly! Thanks, might be all good fun.... and cheer us up after this not so nice or kind week.

Hi,

No 4 feather now hanging in half..... DO I want a garden pet chicken or show chicken??

The former anyday.

Hi,

Well I've just done a reckie on our Millie and she now has 6 broken feathers on one foot! ... Our entries have been submitted, along with the egg entries. The show is on Sat, and we will still be taking her along, even though we may be greatly disillusioned! Yesterday I caught her sitting on her newly laid egg for an extra hour. Whats the ofdds her going broody along with rest of our girlies.

Wouldn't you just believe it, I have been collecting eggs from the two girlies, who in our opinion lay the nicest shaped eggs etc, and for some reason they arn't meeting the grade this week. They have ridges and are a little dirty. So bathtime schedules for Thursday, and got the kit organised. Just hope she doesn't decide to spread those gorgeous wings and fly off...... have got some mealworms in the kit too.

Oh well, at least we get to see lots of other birds, and maybe learn a thing or two along the way......

Will update you and post some piccys. ;)

Hi Liz,

What birds did he show, or was he viewing? Check out some of the bird photos from the show on the "showing eggs" post in the same section.

We had a great time and learnt so much....... might get to see you or OH at another show, maybe Bakewell or Nantwich which is coming up soon??

Sharron
