My poor DiNozzo, salmon faverolle cockerel, has been attacked by the hens in the coop. It happened saturday night. I put him in a separate pen, but inside the main run and sprayed him with purple spray. They were all let out as usual sunday afternoon, all seemed fine. We left DiNozzo in the spare coop on his own sunday night.
Monday morning I let them all out together and all seemed fine, they all went to roost in the main coop monday night and DiNozzo went too. They all seemed OK.
I went to let them out tuesday morning and my poor boy as been viscously set on again, with what looks like bare flesh and meat on his back end, it looks a real mess. I am so upset with myself, I really should have known better, but they all seemed to be fine and settled.
I have now put him back by himself with a small run. Bathed it and purple sprayed it again, but there seems to be so much damage, but I have seen him poo. His two girls wont leave him, and sit by his run chatting to him, they are so gentle, I dont think it was them, but my hybrids. There is also Hilts, my other cockerel, but I still think it was the hybrids as when DiNozzo got away from me they really went after him.
Is there anything else I should be doing? He is eating, drinking and pooing, although that must be really sore and painful for him. He also looks a bit miserable and sad, but I expect he is feeling so very sore. Should I keep bathing it? or keep it dry? I am thinking of putting something on to keep the flies off. We are going to separate him and his girls, if he makes it, this weekend, until then he will stay where he is and be safe. We dont have a poultry vet near, but I am sure if I took him to my normal vet, they would want to PTS. I really want to give him a chance, am I being unrealistic....?????

Another very hard lesson learned. I know chickens can be cannibalistic, but they have all lived happily until now..... so wonder what changed.....???? :(

sorry for the long post

Hi Kalynta, I'm so sorry to hear about your poor boy. This post didn't come up for me on the New Posts list, so I'm boosting it up the list again by this reply, although I don't know how to help you. I hope someone more experienced will pick it up, and that he gets better soon.

If the wound is now clean don't keep bathing it. The wound needs to dry, you say "so much damage" I had one that decided to do a kamikaze flight over its run in front of a Border Terrier. The dog snapped at it and grabbed a mouthful of feathers, but the momentum caused the feathers and the flesh to be ripped off, causing a large wound from the base of its neck to halfway down its back.
I use Betadine Dry Powder Spray, It's a DRY powder helps to dry the wound and is antiseptic. You can use Savlon Dry Powder spray. The active ingredient is Providone Iodine.
I have also had success in protecting wounds with Savlon Spray Plaster.
Back wounds and top of head wounds are the easiest to treat as they can be kept clean easier,
Keep him on his own, but let him see others, but keep him warm, especially at night.
If he's eating ok and is interested in whats going on around him it sounds as if he is over the worst as far as shock is concerned, but keep warm. keep warm, keep warm.
The only thing a vet would do is give an antibiotic shot to protect from infection.

Yes, I have also treated an injured chicken with dry antiseptic spray. One of my girls was bitten by a fox on two separate ocasions, each time just a small wound, but stil a foxes teeth must carry lots of germs! If youve bathed it once I suggest just stick with the dry spray. You can reapply every day or so, dont worry about dust or anything, that wont do any harm and it is much cleaner to keep a wound open to the air and dry. Good luck. I think he might be ok. You might eventually need a separate coop though to keep him and his girls in though?

How's he getting on, Kalynta? After 6 days, i hope he's still making progress.

He is still here and has perked up quite a bit. I am putting black antibacterial wound powder on him. It is drying up, but is still a mess, bless him.

We are going to do a separate run for him and his two girls this weekend, but might just keep him in his own little run for a bit longer, just incase Rizzoli and Isles decide to peck at it. I have noticed also they have some feathers pecked off their legs.

Blummin chickens, and here was me thinking what a happy bunch they were :-)19 They have a big run and come onto the big lawn in the afternoon, have warned them, any more and they go "in the dog"

Thanks so much for all the help and info. :-)17

Don't put him back until he has healed and there is nothing to peck at, even with his "friendly"
hens, they will peck at anything different, not because they are nasty, but because they are chickens.
You named him well if it was after DiNozzo from NCIS, in the end the ladies usually come out on top.
erm, that doesn't sound quite right

YUP named after DiNozzo from NCIS, just love that prog...

He had a lovely afternoon on the lawn with all of them out, specially with Rizzoli and Isles, named after another really good prog, with me keeping watch, but his now back in his own bachelor pad. When he is all healed and better all three will be in a separate pen.

I dont flippin believe it!!!!!!!!

Went to let them out this morning and they have had a go at another one  !!!!!

So do the black powder thing, and another hospital pen!!!! at this rate I will have more beds than the National Health....

I really cant understand it, they have been together since we got them way back in March and did the introductions of new ones right. They have been a really happy flock till now :-)19 :-)19 :-)19

Gonna have to have a rethink, might try to get Little Lacy, not sure if it is a cockerel or hen yet, in with DiNozzo and his girls.

Any ideas as to why it has suddenly gone wrong? They have a big pen, come out onto the lawn, have good food and treats, lots of logs to play on.... :?

Anyhow, will keep you updated, thanks so much for help and input.
