Hello all.
My new hen house is just about ready to go. I've made sure the door stayed open so they can wander in and out and get used to it. Some of them have been laying in the nest boxes which is a good sign but none have roosted there overnight.
I'm hoping to see the move go with as little stress as possible for them but is it going to be a case where I just remove the old house and point the way at bedtime?

Any ideas anyone to help the move go a bit smoother?

Jamie

I'd remove the old house, and, at bed time put any to bed in the new house that haven't gone to roost their automatically.
In the past,if I put a new house exactly where the old house was,the hens have used it straight away with no problems.
If I put it in a different position, the hens go and sit on the ground where their old house was......... :-)02 .

Yep, I'd get rid of the old one and put them stright into the new one tonight.
Thats what I did about 6 or so weeks ago when I got my new house, left it in the garden for a couple of days so they could go for a nosey then did a swap in/out (into exactly same position as old coop) and they took to it without any glitches, if I remember rightly I did do a 5 day boost of ACV and some porridge with poultry spice tho in case they were stressed and I was missing it.... up to you if you want to do that, it may well have been me going OTT which isn't unusual when it comes to my girls

If you take the old shed down, they'll adapt quicker but it's a good sign they're laying in the new boxes. You may have to drive them in a couple of nights. What's porridge ? Do we get it down here ?- if not Aileen will be able to go into the export trade !

Well, I can't put the new house in place of the old one because I built this to wthstand a nuclear blast! The posts are sunk into the ground and the floor is made of paving slabs! I'm away for a week soon, Ill take the old house and shepherd them into the new one.

Hi Lydia, long time to type! You doing ok?

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

I don't know where the time goes.......it's flying by me all the time with out me doing half the things I need to do :-)07 ....
I'm doing great,how about you?

Hello

Been really busy myself, partly due to ongoing back trouble. Been in and out of hospital getting spinal injections to keep me upright. I've had to put extra effort into staying fit for work so a lot of time is going into the allotment I took on. It's still half covered in weeds though!

Was all set to hatch out some chicks but I went away with a dozen under a hen but came back to find three!
I think the local corvid population is to blame so I'm going to get some payback!

Jamie

Go get 'em Oseric ! (Jamie) :-)17 I am currently running a war against a Rat and Magpie insergency coalition at our allotements. I wish my Webley Falcon had a new compresion washer ... these long summer evenings are great for a bit of hunting for predators around the runs. I narrowly beet my Cockeral last year in the "rats killed" competition ... :-)10

Puzzled...

Someone has been poisoning jackdaws in the village, there's a distinct lack of starlings too
