Hi,
hope someone can help, been away a few days and come back to a very ill girl, she is a lavender leghorn and is very pretty.
She had a grey looking comb before we left and I thought I would keep an eye on her, but tonight I have come home to find her sitting outside , she is very thin and has a terrible wheeze when she breaths, I have brought her into the kitchen and given her some water with a syringe, any ideas what else I can do, would sweet water give her a bit of nourishment, not sure if she will survive the night.

any help gratefully accepted Heather

Hi Heather.

Just doing some site admin and spotted your messgae - I think she needs to see a vet - it sounds to me like she has some sort of respiritory infection and if she hasn't gone too far, prescription antibiotics such as Tylan or Baytril might help her.

She doesn't sound too good though I'm afraid. :(

Hi Tim,

I have sat up all night with her, I liquidised some layers pellets and have given them warmed with syringe, I have also given water, she is so thin you could pick her up with the breast bone ,it is just like a handle.
She is more perky and not rasping so bad , our vet is not open untill tomorrow only for emergencies , but I will give him a ring.

do you think I could put some crushed garlic in the water? if so can I just crush a clove into a mug full and give by syringe regularly as I am with the food mix.

thanks for such a quick reply, Heather

Hi Heather,

I would be trying to give her some extra protein if you can - mealworms are idea but I doubt you'll get them today unless the local pet shop is open and sells them. Eggs have lots of protein too - you could hard boil and feed the yolk. This contains everything she needs except Vitamin C.

Yes, if she is drinking then fresh crushed Garlic in the water could be a help. If you have ACV, a drop of this can stimulate the appetite and is good for cutting through mucus.

I would try to get her to the vets first thing tommorrow and hope they can diagnose her and offer some medication.

Good luck...

Hi Tim,

thanks, I will give mealworms and egg yolk cooked, I can also give ACV in water.
I will grind down mealworms and add to liquid to give by syringe and do the same with egg yolk.

She is trying to offer some resistance to being syringe fed and watered but small amounts every hour is what she is getting.

I will contact the vet first thing tomorrow and hope she survives, she is so thin, nothing in her crop, since last night she has passed a very watery dropping . She is sitting with head up at the moment, better than before when head was down in corner of box.

Thanks for support and help. Heather

Hi,

thanks for asking about Lavender, I took her to the on call vet on wednesday morning and he thought she had a tumour and asked me to see our usual vet this morning when he returned.

She seemed to be a bit better and was interested in what was happening in the kitchen around her, eating and drinking but still breathing very fast with her beak open, but still not standing.

Sadly our vet who is very good and often gives me advice on my quail as well as the chickens, said there was nothing we could do, her abdomen was full of fluid and her colour around the head indicated heart failure, and so i decided not to prolong her suffering.

I am very sad to loose her as she was very pretty and only about one year old.

I will try and locate another lavender leghorn in the spring perhaps.

Kind regards and a happy new year
Heather
