Hi quick question, is Jeyes safe for use around chickens ? I know as a cat breeder it is a definite NO as it contains phenols. However there are folk on another forum saying it is safe. Some also say its safe when dry ?
Can chickens digest a samll amount of this stuff and be OK ?
It's only to try to settle things i am wary of using it because of my cat breeding etc ?

Thanks ;)

Why would you use it when there are several disinfectants such as Poultry Shield or Barrier V1, which are developed specifically to be safe with chickens and also smell quite pleasant? I wouldn't ever use Jeyes as its really toxic stuff, I wouldn't want to handle it or breathe the fumes myself or subject the girls to it either. I think its use is now restricted anyway, isn't it?
I would say, why risk it, if it's toxic to people and cats, birds would probably be even more at risk.

My thoughts exactly, yet i have found loads of people who say its fine, i mentioned to them about the phenols etc but their reply has been "well it works for me" ! i have been amazed and a tad worried about the array of disenfectants some people use. Asda's extra strong, Morrisons blah blah, most i would even use as drain cleaner, scary !
Anyway thanks marigold x

We used Jeyes to kill Onion White Root Rot spores on our garden tools prior to exporting them. Very toxic stuff Starpaws and wouldn't get it anywhere near chickens. Poultry Shield works fine and is a lot cheaper.

thanks Chris, i am with you and marigold. I bred Maine Coon cats for many years and would never go near jeyes but on another forum it seems quite the norm to use it to swill down chicken runs and it got me worried. I use Poultry shield, was concerned that folk out there are using it for their chickens....!!! It is so difficult as a newbie to know whats wrong and whats right.

I rarely use any disinfectants, once every few months I will clean with Virkon S usually early autumn and then that's it. I use a little Stalosan F under the bedding in winter. Never used Jeyes.

maine coons StarPaw, gorgeous cats, I have had them now for 20 years :D

This is Remy, completely off thread I know! :D :D

I never use Jeyes now simply because it not as effective as the Jeyes of old. I used to use it in the garden, but now for pots, greenhouse staging ect., bleach.
For hard surfaces that dry before stock uses it, bleach. I'm a big believer in bleach, as evidenced by the light colloured spots on a lot of my clothing :D (My daughter calls me a bleach junkie)
I also use Virkon S for deep cleaning, and Viratec-P for normal cleaning. bleach for cleaning concrete or hard surfaces, feeding and drinking utensils.

Again off topic, I was going to have A Maine Coon, but after meeting a few breeders, and especially the last one with her supercilious attitude. (I'm sure starpaws wasn't like that :)) I got a Norwegian Forest Cat, gentle giant. Sadly now deceased. He lived with five Shiba Inu as part of the pack. He and the Alpha dog ignored each other, he was best friends with the Alpha bitch, played with the others , until they got too cheeky :)

foxy, I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark ally

Hi Foxy, do we know each other ? I bred maine Coons for 18 yrs up in Cheshire, retired from it about 2 years ago. Our prefix was obviously Starpaws !
We have a bit in common then Maine Coon and chickens lol . Remy look very rugged and handsome x

Hi EddieS, sorry you found bad breeders with bad attitudes when looking for you Maine Coon. There were and still are some breeders like that, part of the reason we shopped showing was because of nasty, jealous breeders..not good. Still we did pretty well over the years and bred some loving, happy babies. Norwegians are lovely too, very similar in nature to Coonies, .
I am also a great bleach lover, like you i have some stunning unique t shirts and trackies haha x

It was all the rage once Starpaws -tie dying and bleaching. Before my time mind, read about it in a book-honest!

Nice looking cat Foxy. Used to like cats, but now only if they stay well clear of our chickens.

Hi,
I work with Jeyes so I thought you might like to check out the Jeyes Fluid website which has advice on usage of Jeyes Fluid - it's at http://www.jeyesfluid.com

Cheers
