got a broody sitting on eggs. day 21 was on Wednesday she is still sitting tight. When she got off to eat this morning quickly candeled the eggs. One we threw as it looked like it had never been fertile. The other two did have air pockets so we put them back and she went and sat back on them. How long after 21 days would you give up on the eggs. There had obviously been something there but have they died somewhere along the line.

my eggs were about 5 days late but that was in home made incubator cant wait to set eggs under broody

think I will prob give her until Monday. Yeah nothing like hatching with a broody so much easier and really nice to see the chicks with their mum defo my preference. My broody who has hatched eggs before is very reliable and hatched to exact date. But the two newbies the first one was two days late and this one now nearly four days late they very young so maybe they spent a little too long off the eggs and delayed the hatching. Good to know they can hatch up to five days late, will keep my fingers crossed that the two chicks manage to hatch.

well she hatched both eggs on day 27 would you believe was just about to give up and bin the eggs. When I picked her up to get the eggs from under her there were two little chicks newly hatched.

Congratulations on your chicks arrival.

I think I would wait at least a week to be sure the babies were not just overdue.
When I was a child I went to the dump with my dad on a 100 degree day. Someone had dumped a truck load of eggs and the poor little babies were hatching, peeping in distress and dying in the hot sun.
It was one of the most traumatic things I have ever seen and have never forgotten.
So if a big professional lot could get it so wrong, my advice is don't give up too soon.

Oh, I am SO relieved to hear you say that hatching can be delayed. My little Pekin is sitting on bantam orps, so I thought they would hatch on day 19/20. We're up to day 23 now and I was beginning to give up hope. I just checked the eggs and 3 of them are not looking too good at all, so I've ditched them, but the other 3 have large (2/3rds) shaddows and an air sack at tthe bottom - is is what they should look like?
I didn't realise that the hen could delay the hatch by not sitting right - and this is her first time, bless her little feathered feet.
So, should I leave her with them until 28 days - that would be 9 days late?
Fingers crossed, I'm so excited.

absolutley leave them if they have large air sacs they sound as if they going to hatch OK. As i said I had all but given up. My broody was a little pekin and I guess she just stayed off the nest too long now and again which delayed things. Sounds to me like you going to get chicks Good Luck fingers crossed for you

anything yet liz keeping all my fingers crossed for you eggs sound good to me so expecting good news soon

Nothing yet, Val. I'm losing hope, so keep everything crossed for us. Storrs Poultry will have some day old bantams next Wednesday, so I might just pop along and try and sneak some under her if nothing happens over the weekend.
I'll let you know ASAP.
