House Size & Perch Height for Speckledies & Friends?

Hard wood chips? If so, where from as if local id be interested in getting some

Not sure if they're hardwood but if they're good enough for her they're good enough for me lol and my enclosure is roofed so shouldn't mulch down in a hurry, but she said they're chips not bark and they're in Kent.

Ah Kent, too daaaaan saaarf for me, i need to find somewhere midland based for some soom.

Hi again,
No cockerel as we are not allowed to have them on the allotment. It is the girls really. They can be quite raucous at times especially if something spooks them. It only goes on for a few minutes at a time but can be very loud at times! :-)11
Woodchip sounds a bargain! We get it dropped in on the allotments free sometimes but deliveries are quite erratic. The thing is it does not store very well if you pile it up for a later date.u

Oops ok, I thought it was just cockerals that were noisy at daybreak, we'll have to go back to plan A and put a door on the pop hole. We're trying not to annoy the neighbors right from the off!

Depends on the individual, most of mine make no noise but one becomes a little vocal when she sees me and decides it's eating time.

So its Thursday, roll on Friday. I went to visit my pre-ordered family of chickens today I was very excited, but my excited slowly ebbed further and further away as I realised the speckledys were some sort of rock cross instead, they weren't vaccinated, my bluebelles feathers were all clipped too short and bleeding, then she took it to her treatment area in a building amongst some caged birds the first of which was dead! I know everyone can have an off day and I felt like a real messer but I just didn't feel comfortable about the set-up, but fingers crosses I'm visiting someone else tomorrow.

WELL DONE djscorpio !!! So many of us would not have turned them down and you will have saved yourself a whole lot of heartache !

Most of the Speckledies are hybrids which are crosses but they are perfectly good legitimate laying birds. It is a very bad mistake to make the feathers bleed - totally un-necessary. There are far too many people now jumped onto the bandwagon some with little experience, some just out for the money.

I hope today brought you more luck.

Thankyou. I have to tell you it was really pretty brave for me. But yes today went really well and I met a lovely woman with a nice attitude and nice chickens to match. I sat in amongst them for 3/4hr chatting to her while the chickens made friends with me pecking at my at hair, rings and coat. So yes, I'm a very happy bunny today thank you.

We went to a couple of places before we settled on somewhere to buy from. One place looked lovely but the birds lookeda little ratty nno quite old also sseemed theycaught them with a huge net.

Glad you found somewhere you're happy about. Getting good stock in the first place is so important. Having bought less- than- satisfactory birds in the past, I've now found a really reliable breeder and have always had really healthy birds that lay well from him.

Well these are definitely youngsters, their combs were small and they seem healthy enough running around, their eyes, nostrils and feathers looked clean and they were very, very inquisitive lol. Is that everything I need to check? Think all will be well. She recommended a feed supplier near her so I got their pellets, corn, bedmax and vitamins yesterday but forgot the grit but I'll get that when I pick them up, also need diatom and poultry shield.

Sounds great, when do you collect them? Best time of year for getting new pullets, the breeder has had all the winter problems and you will soon get all the fun - and the eggs.

Monday 16th.... so long away. But we've got lots to do. Hubby's laid the concrete, but still got two sides to panel and a coop to build. While I get the easier decorative jobs of wood-staining the sides in jade and blue stripes! We're still waiting on the grass seed to sprout on the patchy areas what with the weather and I'm thinking about planting some oregano, nasturtiums, lavender, etc in pots.

Well done on walking away from the first place djscorpio :-)17

Glad you found a suitable source. I think your new girls will be very happy with you :)

Thanks ncotb, I hope they'll be happy we've certainly put in a lot of hours, we've been putting everything together til about 10.30 every night this week, the grass hasn't begun to sprout (obviously lol) we've laid turf and will have to sort outside area next week, but covered area all done now, thank goodness. I'll have a go at posting some pictures when the girls arrive next week. Can't wait!
