A friend of my daughter's lost all of his ducks (apart from one) and several ducklings following a fox attack. He is now in the process of building a new fenced area.
I have always been facinated by ducks and have adopted the sole survivor. He is very nervous at the moment which is understandable, i have given him the lower part of my garden, it is approximately thirty feet by 20 feet, surrounded by high hedges the bases of which i have 'fenced off' with wire mesh. He has his own secure house which is approximately three feet by five feet and high enough for him to stretch out, i have sunk a water container in the ground which is one metre long, half a metre wide and half a metre deep. I feed him layer pellets and he has tried shreaded cabbage leaves (but didn't seem impressed). I have read that they love hard boiled eggs, tomatoes and lettuce. I have only had him for three days and need to get some wheat and chicken grit, i have been told to put the wheat in his water bowl as this will discourage rats and mice. I intend purchasing a mate for him when his previous owner re-stocks.
My question is..............am i doing things correctly so far and is there any advice you can give?
Many thanks in advance.
