Hi everyone ,
I have 3 chickens , the two bantams appear to be sick .
First chicken, about a month ago had smelly breath , bubbles in the eye and was lethargic and a lesion on the cheek which resolved within 2 weeks ,
and hasnt had bubbly eyes or lesions since . However , today I have noticed that in one nostril she was bleeding , it just started all of a sudden the other two chickens werent with her at the time . any ideas ? i know that the symptoms of a month ago sound like corzya , do you think it has come back and created a blood nose ? Any ideas I would be grateful :)

the second hen , her scales on her feet appear to be eaten , (mites im guessing ) ,our friends gave us some advice and we had been doing accordingly and the feet have not been getting worse which is a bonus :-)08 , but the only thing is she has some respiratory problem looks like , it sounds like a sort of purring especially with you pick her up , she sneezes now and then , im just wondering is this because of when shes scratching her feet maybe the mites went in her mouth and are in her lungs now ?

Any ideas or similarities with your hens ?
much appreciated

Hi Kavi94 and welcome to the forum. Sounds like lots of problems which surface when birds are stressed -like when moving home. Bubbles in the eyes is symptomatic of Micoplasma and also Infectious Bronchitis (in my experience). Smelly breath and a runny nose is IB as we have had this. Are these birds new and have they been immunised for IB, as it could just be a flare -up of that. The 'purring' is a respiratory infection or again IB. A trip to the vet is needed I think.

The feet problem is unrelated. Sounds like a very bad case of scaley leg mite where the scales have actually fallen off. We treat ours with a dip in Benzol Benzoate (from the vet) but our new neighbour has used essential oils and dipped his cockerels feet in it to suffocate the mites which has worked very well. He mixed up various nut oils but I have heard of sunflower oil being used. It will pass to the other two so they need treating as a precaution.

Hi Kavi94, and welcome.
Chris's advice is good, as always, vet for the ones showing signs of bronchial trouble of one kind or another, if possible.
Scaley leg is very common, and there are several ways to deal with it. Either you kill the mites with scaley leg spray (don't know if you can get this in NZ but I expect so) or Benzyl Benzoate, or/and you suffocate them with Vaseline. This is messy but soothing.
You have to go on treating this condition for some time as the mite eggs will be there under the scales and a new generation will hatch if you don't keep up the treatment for several weeks. Its hard to know when you've overcome it as the old scales won't be shed or new ones grown until the bird's next moult. Maybe get the vet to check this is is actually the correct diagnosis if you take them about the bronchial problems.
I will move this thread to Chickens Health for you.

Must amend my comment. It isn't smelly breath but a smelly nasal discharge with IB. It is a very characteristic smell which gets spread all over the bird as a result of preening. Smelly breath is sour crop.

Thanks Chris and Marigold ,
the vet that i went to didnt know much about hens , apparently . We got them last november so almost a year now , I have seen hens much worse than what my hen has in regards to the leg , its worked very well with sunflower oil and vaseline , the leg hasnt lost any scales after treating her which im very happy about ,but yea we are continuing to do that . bothchickens however dont have the same symptoms, it definitely looks like my first one has IB , but my second hen just sneezes theres no other symptoms ,no runny nose or bubbling eyes ,she doesnt have smelly breath either.
Well , I will try to take them back to the vet , thank you both for your advice though , :D
