Hi all

I'm new here and looking forward to joining your community :D

Anyhow, I've not got any Chooks yet.. Bit of a long story I was planning on getting some earlier on in the year but because I became sick I had to put it on the back-burner..Fast forward to a few months later I have purchased my first incubator after feeling I'm about ready and I want to hatch my first Chicks..

Obviously I have done research and I know that a great proportion of hatchings are cockerels and that I will have to dispatch of them humanely or re-home the ones I cant keep:) I'm just really excited as I've wanted to keep Chickens for a while now ^ ^

Thanks for having me ^ ^ Luke

Hi Luke,
welcome to the forum, chooks are lovely and very rewarding.I doubt if you'd be able to get any fertile eggs at the moment,if you could, it would also be a bad time to hatch them out with winter coming on.
But,it is a very exciting project to do in the spring.
Have you decided yet which breeds or hybrids you want to hatch out?

Hi Lydia

Thanks for them welcome and to honest I just want to get everything ready now instead of later :D like you said going to wait :D

As for breeds I've have been looking and I really like Orpingtons, Light Sussex or Rhode Island Red. So many nice breeds

Hi,
I've thought about keeping chickens myself over the years a few times, finally got some this year.I was going to buy an incubator and hatch out my own, but, knew i wouldn't be able to dispatch the cockerals  .Also,my luck goes that out of 6 eggs I'd get 6 cockerals......
So,I decided to go ahead and buy some adult birds.
I've got 3 ex-batts,2 pekin bantams and 1 RIR,just waiting for someone who has or has had RIR to id her for me in the pics section.
I do know what you nean about chicken breeds, there isn't a chicken breed that I don't like,I also like the hybrids.Everyone I know seems to have had an orpington, one in a mixed flock, and in all cases they have been the favourite bird.I suspect because they look cuddly and come to be picked up and cuddled :D .

I also know what you mean about waiting,I booked 4 ex-batts and got more excited as the date got nearer.
I don't really have a favourite,I did,but she died  .The others are all lovely, and, where I've only got a few their individual personalities are really easy to spot.

Hi Luke,

Welcome to our Poultry Forum.

Great to have you on board ;)

Orpingtons are great. I've kept Buff, Gold Laced, White and Black over the years but now I'm concentrating on a few more waterfowl so have cut back to just white at the moment that are the better layers.

I have a trio of White Orps that I'm probably going to have to sell this winter in preparation for my spring hatch of ducklings.

See you in the forums.

Tim
