Hi,

Have had an ongoing problem with one of my ladies...( chuicken )
She appears to not be digesting her food properly overnight....have been working with it now for over a week...
Massage her crop at night, its usually squishy...come morning its undigested & firmish like putty...
Put her on soft food...also some natural yogurt...bit of flax oil....apple sauce & just chick crumbs & obvious grit etc. Still massaging pm & am & still this firmish putty crop in morning...which I massage & break up...feeling finger & thumb between etc.

Spoke to someone...& then tried her back on mixed corn...& took her off the chicke crumb ..( some say this can become firm when wet..
Still in the morning....firm / putty block...worse...cos has loads of undigested hard grains..
There is pigeon grit always available & they free range largish area.

Because I'm massaging & giving her good liquids..ACV in water & vits..she is happy & well at mo.
But if I lay off with the above & yogurt / oil mix....her pooh will show she is struggling..
But always in the morning...large crop ...undigested food.

I also tried the live maggot thing...some have had success with feeding handful live maggots end of day...to eat & break up the block...
What might be going on here...as some is passing through...coz she can have good poohs..
But her crop is always full & puttyfied in morning.

Today...I am attempting to keep her seperate & apart from yogurt /applesauce / small oil mix & good liquid
am fasting her...to see if her full puttyfied crop with lots of undigested grain will go down...
Bit nervous of fasting her...
But I keep on feeding her on top of this problem....
Then shall attempt the live maggots before bed tonight & hope more is broken down.

What might be going on here??
Is it in the crop or in the gizzard...a block possibly...
Must say when I knew less about this....she had the same back in Oct. & I just handed it over to vet...had her operated on...back in Oct. & thought nothing more of it...thought it was a one off...she then had it again in April...operated again! (agagagagghhhh) now I know...have kept a close eye on her...& now occurring again...vet reluctant to operate again...& course not ideal...build up of scar tissue etc.
So many people say different things...
But this crop can go squishy...be brken up seemingly by hand...but every morning a firm putty like mass in crop...
Are her muscles just not working sufficiently...
If this is the case...how to approach...as she is obviously with all the other chickens...so what she has to have to eat...so do they....apart from today...am attempting to keep her seperate...
Quite difficult as they are feisty, independant spoilt chucks!
Apologies for long windedness...any thoughts greatfully received...& anyone in Shrops. area. that might be able to help....
thankyou

Hi, if she has had two ops and still not right- i would suggest you either take her back to the vet- or let her take her chance with normal food etc- no massaging or yoghurt/oil etc. It could be related to her previous ops- as you say , scar tissue/damaged/missing muscle etc. I think she will be prone to it for the rest of her life- you need to make the right choices for the bird- quality of life etc. You could ring the vet and discuss where you go from here- hope you get her sorted :)
regards, David :)

Hi David,

Thankyou for reply...

Yes...having spoken to vet...he only tends to think in terms of surgery...& has pretty much said not happy to operate again...
Shall have a word again..
Now I know so much more about the subject...I wish he would have told me what might have been causing the block originally...only hope whatever it was originally...was actually all removed....
Have heard of some who had some hessian sack in there...& some with plastic etc.
I did ask him....he just said...huge stink & stuff....
But course back then I wasn't used to her handling her or what to feel for etc.
Think there must be an underlying problem going on here..
Big pain...as apart from this she is in good health & very happy...
If I left her alone....it rapidly becomes bigger & the poohs reflect the problem to.So need to stay on top of it...as shes a loving pet etc.

Thankyou & Kind Regards
